Men’s Golf Tied For 13th After Opening Round Of John A. Burns Intercollegiate

LIHUE, Hawai'i – Santa Clara men's golf carded a 10-over 298 to finish Thursday's first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in a tie for 13th-place with a pair of schools, 11 swings back of co-leaders UNC Wilmington and BYU.

The Broncos actually had a better score, but a clerical error cost them a 2-stroke penalty when Zack Kaneshiro signed the wrong scorecard.

"We're marginal in this field to begin with," head coach Rob Miller said. "We can't afford to be giving strokes away."

Windy conditions on the 6,991 yard Wailua Golf Course layout kept scores relatively low. The co-leaders were the only teams to score under par and six golfers are tied for the individual lead at 3-under.

"The deficit isn't insurmountable, but it's going to be tough in such a strong field," Miller added.

Senior Matt McCarty entered the clubhouse as Santa Clara's top performer alone in 23rd place after an even-par 72. The next four Broncos were each separated by a stroke on the leaderboard.

In his first appearance of the spring junior Berk Harvey grabbed a share of 38th with his 2-over 74. Coming off his best finish as a collegian at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, freshman Alex Conley shot 3-over 75.

Slotted as an individual performer this week, sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer shot a 4-over 76 and junior Jack Avrit finished at 75. Kaneshiro was disqualified for the round, but his scores over the next two days will count toward the team total.

"We played okay today, nothing great," Miller said. "We'll tee it up tomorrow and see if we can do better."

A shotgun start format at 10 a.m. PT opens Round 2. Live tournament scoring is available here.
