McCarty, Men’s Golf Ascend Leaderboard at The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif.Matt McCarty put himself in position for a tournament victory and Santa Clara men's golf moved up the leaderboard during Friday's action at The Goodwin.

McCarty started fast going 3-under in the first three holes on his way to carding a 4-under-par 66, tied for the second-best total in the second round, helping the Broncos improve to a tie for 11th at 15-over 575 at the three-day event.

McCarty is alone in fourth at 6-under 134, two shots behind leader Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary's. Sam Harned of Nevada and Noah Goodwin of SMU are tied for second at 7-under.

All four Santa Clara golfers who figured into the scoring improved from Thursday's opening round when the Broncos posted an 11-over 291.

Santa Clara's 4-over 284 was tied for the sixth-best round on Friday in the 28-team field.

Arizona State leads the way at 9-under 551. Host Stanford is second at 4-under 556. Washington, Saint Mary's and Pepperdine are tied for third at 7-over 567.

The Broncos are among a group of teams from sixth through 17th place separated by just nine shots.

Oscar Zimmerman's 2-over 72 was the second-best score for the Broncos in the second round. Berk Harvey and Alex Conley each shot a 73.

Harvey is tied for 79th at 8-over 148 and Zimmerman is one shot back in a tie for 88th.

Jack Avrit followed his opening round 71 with a 79 is now in a tie for 98th at 10-over. Conley is tied for 114th at 12-over.

The Broncos will tee off at 1:20 p.m. from the 10th tee in Saturday's final round. Follow the scoring on Golftstat.com.
