Paltrinieri In Top-15 After Season-Low 68 On Day One Of Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - Santa Clara men's golf carded solid rounds to complete day one at the Arizona Thunderbirds Invitational, turning in a 3-under 285 after Round 1. The Broncos were scheduled to play 36 holes but still have eight holes to finish Tuesday morning as play was suspended due to darkness.

Italian transfer Julien Paltrinieri led the team carding an outstanding first round of a 4-under 68 which included five birdies and an impressive eagle after putting his drive on the par-4 15th to six feet and making the putt. Viraj Garewal has also found himself under par after turning in a 1-under 71 consisting of four birdies, he is currently even in the second round.

Senior Nolan Forsman and Freshman Eugenio Bernardi each carded rounds of 1-over 73 with Calder Overfelt having a difficult start resulting in a 5-over 77. Paltrinieri was not the only Bronco with an eagle though as Forsman made a 3 on the par-5 1st hole measuring 549 yards.

11th ranked Texas A&M leads the field at 26-under after turning in an 18-under 270, thanks to two players carding rounds of 6-under 66. Texas A&M student and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Sam Bennett currently sits at 4-under overall.

The Broncos dropped to 2-under after partial play of the Second Round but will look to get deeper into red numbers tomorrow. They will resume play again in Tucson with a shotgun start at 7:00 am PST.
