2002 Men's Soccer All-WCC Honors

Six Men's Soccer Players Earn All-WCC Honors

The Santa Clara University men's soccer squad landed six of its players on the All- West Coast Conference teams Wednesday as announced by the league office.

Senior Jamil Walker and sophomore Ryan Cochrane topped the list of Santa Clara players on the All-West Coast Conference teams as the pair received first team honors following the season. Junior midfielder Audren Cashman was named to the second team, while junior Kellen Gilmore and freshmen Jason Cunliffe and Jeff Scott each earned honorable mention honors.

Walker led the WCC in goals and points scored during league play while Cochrane directed a stingy Bronco defense that allowed only seven goals in conference action. Both earned All-WCC honors last year with Cochrane taking home second team honors and Walker earning Honorable Mention status in 2001.

Cashman's selction to the second team was well-deserved as the junior played center midfield all season for the Broncos, the hardest position on the field. He was the only Bronco to start all 17 games this season, chipping in with one goal and one assist on the year.

Gilmore's selection comes after the junior started in 14 of the 16 matches in which he appeared in for the Broncos, posting three assists on the year which ranked second on the team. Cunliffe's honorable mention selction comes after the redshirt freshman scored four goals and assisted on two others. He scored the game-winner against No. 10 Loyola Marymount to help Santa Clara back to the .500 level in league play. Scott's first year on the Mission Campus was deemed a success after his honorable mention seclection came after he scored two goals and assisted on two others. He was at times the most explosive player on the field as his speed and ball-handling gave the opponent fits.

West Coast Conference champion Portland and San Diego split the individual awards in the 2002 WCC Men's Soccer All-Conference team. For the second time in his career, San Diego's Ryan Coiner was named the WCC Player of the Year. Coiner, who shared 2000 Player of the Year honors with Loyola Marymount's Arturo Torres, ranks third on the WCC all-time goals scored list with 49. Coiner's teammate, Scott Burcar, earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Portland freshman standout, Alejandro Salazar, was tabbed the Freshman of the Year. Portland head coach, Clive Charles, led the Pilots to their first WCC men's soccer title in a decade and was rewarded with the WCC Coach of the Year award.
