Steve Cronin Named WCC Player of the Week

Sept. 15, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University men's soccer goalkeeper Steve Cronin was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday following a weekend in which he posted a pair of shutouts.

The junior from Fair Oaks, Calif., notched his third shutout of the season in the Broncos' 1-0 victory over Holy Cross in the first game of the USF/Diadora Classic on Friday night. He returned on Sunday and shutout No. 21 California as Santa Clara played to a 0-0, overtime tie with the Golden Bears in Berkeley.

For the weekend he faced nine shots and made three saves. Thus far in 2003 he has started five of the team's six matches, missing only the Creighton game due to a family obligation. In his five games this season Cronin has posted a 0.19 goals-against average, giving up only one goal in 470 minutes of play.

The Broncos are 4-0-1 in the games that Cronin has played, outscoring their opponents by a 7-1 margin in those contests.

For his career, Cronin has nine career shutouts, including the four this season, to go along with a 0.86 goals-against average for his career. His career GAA currently ranks fourth all-time in school history, placing him just ahead of Joe Cannon who is currently a goalkeeper for the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer.

Cronin and the Broncos will play their first two home contests this season on Thursday and Saturday of this week as they host the annual Santa Clara adidas Classic. SCU will take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday night and George Washington on Saturday evening. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
