Irvine Named to College Soccer News Team of the Week

Sept. 22, 2003

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University sophomore Eric Irvine was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week on Monday for his play over the weekend in the Santa Clara adidas Classic. The seventh-ranked Broncos remained unbeaten following a pair of wins against Cal State Monterey Bay and George Washington in the adidas Classic.

Irvine started the Broncos off in the right direction in the first half against CSUMB with a goal he headed home in the 29th minute off a pass from fellow sophomore Ryan Wolfe. His second goal of the game was another header, this time in the 69th minute off a pass from freshman Tannen Wels.

Santa Clara went on to win the first game of the weekend against the Otters by a 2-0 margin. The Broncos captured the classic title with a 6-0 trouncing of George Washington, who was a NCAA Tournament team in 2002.

The two goals in the first match were enough to earn Irvine Offensive MVP honors for the adidas Classic. His play opened up the offensive end while his defensive help assisted in the Broncos extending their consecutive scoreless minute streak to 447:46, a streak that dates back to September 7.

Additionally, Irvine is now tied for second on the team in goals scored with two, while his point total of four is tied for third on the team.

Irvine and the Broncos return to action three times this week, beginning with a Rivalry Series matchup with San Jose State Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. Later in the week SCU will square off with No. 20 Tulsa on Friday and UMKC on Sunday in the UMKC tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
