Weatherly Named WCC Men's Soccer Player of the Week

Nov. 10, 2003

Santa Clara University midfielder Will Weatherly was named the West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Monday. The honor comes just two days after his game-winning goal against No. 17 San Diego clinched the WCC title for the 4th-ranked Broncos.

Weatherly's goal came in the 51st minute on a penalty kick that he earned after he was taken down inside the penalty box. It was his sixth goal of the season, increasing his team lead in that category as well as in points scored. His 14 points this season gives him a two point lead over teammate Kelechi Igwe.

The junior from Bellevue, Wash., adds the conference honor to his ever building soccer resume. Less than one week ago he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American District VIII First Team, making him eligible for national Acadmeic All-American honors. The voting for that will take place on November 17 and will be announced on November 24.

As a sophomore Weatherly scored five goals and assisted on one other, placing him second on the team in scoring. He was recognized by the WCC for his athletic and academic achievement following his second year at SCU when he was selected to the WCC All-Academic Team.

His 11 career goals and three career assists give him 25 points for his career, making him the active leader in both categories for the Broncos.

Weatherly and his teammates wrap up their 2003 regular season with a 1 p.m. match at Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon. Although the match means nothing as far as the 2003 WCC standings are concerned, Santa Clara is looking to become the first team in league history to record six conference wins in one season.
