Seven Broncos Named to WCC All-Academic Teams

Dec. 11, 2003

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Santa Clara University's Department of Athletics and Recreation had seven of its student-athletes named to the 2003 West Coast Conference Fall All-Academic team Thursday afternoon. Benjamin Gauen and Pat Green from men's cross country, Robin Bell, Katie Hansen and Cara Payne from women's cross country, Megan Kakadelas of women's soccer and Will Weatherly from men's soccer were among the 64 athletes honored by the conference office.

Gauen, a senior finance major with a 3.59 GPA, is a three-time honoree. Bell and Weatherly are now two-time recipients.

These teams honor some of the league's finest examples of the consummate scholar-athlete. At the completion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each of the participating sponsored sports. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team.

"These honorees represent the commitment of WCC student-athletes to both academic and athletic excellence," WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran said. "Every year it's a difficult process to narrow the long list of qualified nominees from each institution. All of those nominated should be proud of their achievements."
