Three Bronco Soccer Stars Receive Postseason Recognition
Santa Clara, Calif. - Three Santa Clara University soccer players were recognized for their outstanding 2006 seasons this week. Senior Keith DeVey was named a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American, while freshmen Stephen McCarthy and Kiki Bosio earned spots on Soccer America's All-Freshmen teams.
DeVey earned a spot on the NSCAA Scholar All-American Third Team to cap his final season at SCU. He previously was named to the Scholar All-Far West Region First Team while being named to the NSCAA All-Far West Third Team. He was also named first-team All-WCC for his strong 2006 campaign. As a senior in 2006, DeVey tied for the team lead in points with 14 on six goals and two assists to conclude an outstanding career on the Mission Campus. With his six goals, DeVey finished his career with 20, placing him into a tie for eighth all-time in school history. He started all 23 games for SCU this season, playing both forward and midfield to help SCU to the West Coast Conference championship and their best NCAA Tournament finish since 2003. He maintained a 3.71 GPA at SCU. Academically, DeVey also earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII honors in 2004 and 2005.
Bosio, a forward, had an excellent first season on the Mission Campus to earn Soccer America All-Freshmen First Team honors. The Mission Viejo, Calif. native scored three goals and notched a team-high eight assists on the season, while starting 19 out of 21 games. She was named first-team All-WCC, while also earning a spot on the WCC All-Freshman team. Bosio also came up big in the biggest games as she scored against both UCLA and Portland, who were ranked in the top-five in the nation at the time. She was named WCC Player of the Week once during the season and twice earned a spot on Soccer America's Team of the Week. Bosio's play helped the Broncos earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
McCarthy proved to be a valuable addition to the Bronco midfield in 2006 on his way to being named to Soccer America's All-Freshmen First Team. A native of Colleyville, Texas, he started 22 out of 23 games in central midfield for SCU and recorded one assist, helping the team earn a No. 10 seed and a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament. McCarthy slid into the defensive midfield role midway through the season and the Broncos went on a nine-game unbeaten streak to run away with the West Coast Conference title for the second time in four years. McCarthy was named the WCC Co-Freshman of the Year for his efforts. He also started all three NCAA Tournament games for the Broncos.

Igwe Named To Roster For Under-20 National Team Training Camp
Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara University freshman Amaechi Igwe has been named to the training camp roster for the United States Under-20 National Team for the camp that runs from Dec. 12 - 23 in Bradenton, Fla. at the IMG Academy. The 12-day camp marks the final time the Under-20s will be together before head coach Thomas Rongen names his final 20-player roster for the 2007 CONCACAF Final Round Qualifying Tournament, which will take place from Jan. 17-21 in Panama City, Panama.
Igwe competed with the Under-20 national team in six matches in 2006, including a closed-door scrimmage against Haiti on Oct. 11. He saw time in two matches against Canada in Toronto in early July, before helping the U.S. to a second-place finish at the 2006 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland in early August. In Canada, Igwe scored his first goal for the team on a header for the only U.S. goal on July 9th, and also assisted on Josmer Altidore's game-winning goal late in the first half in the previous game on July 7th. Igwe started two games in the Milk Cup.
Prior to arriving at Santa Clara in January, Igwe, 18, played at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. and was a part of the U.S. Under-17 residency program. He played in 18 career international games for the U.S. at the Under-17 level and scored one goal. In 2005, he played in 36 total games and scored five goals, before committing to Santa Clara, where he follows in his brother Kelechi's footsteps.
Rongen will announce the final 20-player qualifying roster before the team returns to Bradenton on Dec. 30 for an eight-day camp. The players will head home for three days and then regroup on Dec. 10 in Fort Lauderdale where they will train before heading to Panama for the qualifying tournament on Dec. 14.
The U.S. is in Group A of the 2007 CONCACAF Final Round Qualifying Tournament with Guatemala, Haiti and the host Panama. The top two teams in the group will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, which will take place from June 30-July 22 across six cities - Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, Burnaby and Victoria. The U.S. will be attempting to qualify for their sixth straight FIFA World Cup (formerly FIFA World Youth Championship).

DeVey and Hatzke Earn Scholar All-Region Honors
Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara University soccer players Keith DeVey and Matt Hatzke earned spots on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Scholar All-Region teams today. "It is nice to be recognized by the NSCAA," said DeVey. "I am proud to receive an honor that includes both athletics and academics although I would trade in any individual awards for a chance to get back to the Final Four."

Hatzke had an outstanding junior season on defense for SCU after overcoming an early season injury. The San Jose native started 17 games and scored one goal and recorded two assists while helping the team notch nine shutouts. He was named honorable mention All-WCC, while maintaining a 3.77 GPA in the classroom. Hatzke was also recognized as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII honoree this year.
Both players had major roles in the Broncos run to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals, the team's best finish since a College Cup appearance in 2003.

Three Broncos Selected to NSCAA All-Far West Region Team
Santa Clara, Calif. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced their All-American and All-Region teams this week and three Santa Clara University men's soccer players earned spots on the All-Far West teams. Junior captain Peter Lowry was named to the All-Far West Region First Team, while senior Keith DeVey and junior captain Jamil Roberts both earned spots on the third team. It was the first selection for all three players.
"We are proud to have three deserving players receive this honor," said Broncos head coach Cameron Rast. "Peter, Keith and Jamil were all instrumental in helping us have a successful year. They provided great leadership and all three had excellent seasons on the field."
Lowry, who was previously named second-team All-West Coast Conference, scored six goals and notched two assists on the season for the Broncos, while playing a combination of midfield and forward. After starting the year in center midfield, Lowry moved to forward and the team embarked on a nine-game unbeaten run to help SCU secure a bye in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Lowry scored the Broncos lone goal on a penalty kick in their quarterfinal loss to Wake Forest.

Roberts, a Fremont, Calif. native, led the Broncos in minutes this past season with 2,152 while leading a Bronco defense that posted nine shutouts and a 0.95 goals against average. Roberts, a central defender, scored his lone goal of the year on a long-range blast against Niagara on Sept. 4 and later notched an assist on Jide Ogunbiyi's clinching goal against Loyola Marymount in a 2-0 win. That win over LMU gave the Broncos their first WCC title since 2003. Roberts was also named honorable-mention All-WCC.
Last year, Mehdi Ballouchy was a first-team All-Far West selection as well as an NSCAA first-team All-American for the Broncos

Buttitta and Dalmy Sweep WCC Player of the Month Honors
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University has continued to flex its muscles as "Soccer U" in 2006, as the men's team has already clinched their ninth West Coast Conference title, and with a win on Saturday, the women's side can clinch their ninth conference title as well. On the individual side of things, men's goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta and women's defender Marian Dalmy continued their stellar years as they were each named the WCC Player of the Month for the month of October.
It is the first such honor for each player, and it comes on the heels of both Buttitta and Dalmy being named the most recent recipients of WCC Player of the Week honors on Oct. 30.
Buttitta's solid and steady goalkeeping in October helped the Broncos to a 6-0-2 mark in conference play, propelling the team to the top of the WCC standings and eventually to the title, as the San Jose native made five saves and withstood 10 shots in the opening 20 minutes in SCU's title-clinching 2-0 win at Loyola Marymount on Oct. 29. Boosted by a suffocating back line, Buttitta posted four shutouts during the month to bring his WCC-leading total to seven, and lower his WCC-best goals-against average to 0.76.
Dalmy, who shared Player of the Month honors with Portland's Michelle Enyeart, made her case as one of the final nominees for the M.A.C. Hermann Award by exhibiting her all-around abilities from both sides of the ball. With three goals and five assists on the attack, and being a major part of a Bronco defense that shut out three opponents in October, Dalmy helped lead Santa Clara to a 5-1-1 mark and also into a tie with Portland atop the WCC standings. The Lakewood, Colo. native was clutch for the Broncos in delivering three goals and three assists in the month's final three matches, and leads all WCC defenders with five goals and 16 points on the season.
Both teams conclude their regular season this weekend, as the men host Portland Friday night at 7 p.m. before closing the season out with a Senior Day match against Gonzaga at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The women travel up to Moraga Saturday afternoon to battle the Gaels in a 1 p.m. contest.

Lowry Named Comcast Community All-Star Award Winner For May
Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara men's soccer player Peter Lowry was named the Comcast Community All-Star Award winner for last May at the men's soccer game against San Jose State on the evening of September 22, 2006. The award was presented to Lowry by head coach Cameron Rast in front of a crowd of about 3,500 spectators.
Lowry, a junior finance major from Fair Oaks, Calif., has shown his involvement in the community in a variety of ways. His participation extends throughout many community service activities both on and off campus.
Lowry is a strong presence not only in the community, but on the field as well. As a freshman, he started with a bang, scoring in the first three minutes of his college soccer career. He started in all but one of the men's soccer games last year as center midfielder, willingly giving up his position that game to a deserving senior on Senior Day. His career of 60 games includes 12 goals, eights assists and 32 points.
The Comcast Community All-Star Award is presented to Santa Clara student-athletes, who are active in benefiting their local community. The award was developed two years ago and is presented monthly to a different student-athlete who is positively contributing their time and energy to help others.

Bronco Defenders Matt Hatzke and Matt Marquess Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII
Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara University juniors Matt Hatzke and Matt Marquess were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII winners for their outstanding work on the soccer field and in the classroom in 2006. Both players have been key contributors to the men's soccer team's West Coast Conference Championship season, while maintaining high grade point averages. By being named District VIII winners, both players will now be eligible for Academic All-American honors, which will be announced at a later date. Santa Clara has posted an 11-3-4 record on the season and a 7-1-2 mark in WCC play.
"I am very proud of what our players accomplish both on and off the field," said head coach Cameron Rast. "Matt and Matt are both exemplary students and have been integral to our team's success this year. They are great representatives of the soccer program as well as the University."
In his third year as a Bronco, Hatzke has been a rock at left back for a defense that has allowed only 16 goals in 18 games and posted seven shutouts. After overcoming an early-season injury, Hatzke has proven to be a great two-way threat for SCU, playing strong defense while also jumping into the attack. He scored his first goal of the year against Portland on Oct. 8 on a free kick. In the classroom, the marketing major has a 3.77 GPA.
After appearing in all 22 games a year ago with 16 starts, Marquess has had an even better junior year, starting all 18 games and leading the Broncos in minutes played. He has now appeared in 40 straight games for SCU after transferring to Santa Clara following his freshman year at UC Santa Cruz. With Marquess in the middle, the Broncos have been one of the top defenses in the nation this season with seven shutouts and a team goals against average of 0.85. He registered the first assist of his career on Sept. 8 against Saint Louis, setting up Aaron Clubb for the game's first goal. A finance major, Marquess possesses a 3.75 GPA.

The Bronco men wrap up the regular season with two WCC contests this weekend. On Friday, Nov. 3, they take on Portland at 7:00 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium before concluding the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw.

Buttitta and Dalmy Both Earn WCC Player of the Week Honors
Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara University soccer players Joseph Buttitta and Marian Dalmy were both named West Coast Conference Player of the Week after leading their respective teams to important victories over the weekend. Buttitta allowed just one goal in two Bronco wins over San Diego and Loyola Marymount to help SCU clinch the WCC title. In her only match of the week Sunday, Dalmy celebrated her Senior Day with two goals and an assist in the Broncos 4-0 win over San Francisco.
The Broncos sophomore goalkeeper earned two more wins over the weekend to help Santa Clara clinch the WCC title for the first time since 2003. Against San Diego on Friday, Buttitta allowed just one goal to help Santa Clara earn a 2-1 overtime victory over the Toreros. The San Jose native followed that performance up with a dominating shutout on Sunday against Loyola Marymount. Buttitta made five saves in the game and withstood 10 shots in the opening 20 minutes of the game to lead SCU to a 2-0 win. The win clinched the WCC title for the Broncos, who are now 7-1-2 in the conference. Buttitta has posted a league-leading seven shutouts on the season and has not allowed more than one goal in his past eight games as the Broncos have posted an eight-game unbeaten streak. He currently leads the WCC in goals against average at 0.76.
"Joe has been gaining great experience this year in his first season as our starter," said men's head coach Cameron Rast. "He has steadily improved throughout the season and has consistently played at a high level. He always seems to rise to the occasion and he did it again this week so we are proud to have him earn the honor."
The Santa Clara women's side made it two in a row Monday as senior defender Marian Dalmy was named the WCC Player of the Week, following teammate Kiki Bosio, who earned the honor last week. Dalmy netted a pair of goals and assisted on another in Sunday's 4-0 win over San Francisco on Senior Day at Buck Shaw Stadium. With the win, the Broncos remain in a tie for first with Portland in the WCC standings with matching 4-1-1 records.
"Marian's leadership and her play on both ends of the field have been top-notch for us all year," said head coach Jerry Smith. "It was appropriate that on Senior Day she really dominated the match, which is not an easy thing to do from an outside back position, but she's done that for us a few times this season. Marian has been consistent for us all year long and is recognized across the country as a top player. It's great to see her recognized as the WCC Player of the Week."
The performance continued a recent hot streak for the team captain, as she has scored three times and registered three assists in the last four matches. On the season, Dalmy leads all WCC defenders with five goals and 16 points and is a nominee for the M.A.C. Hermann Award, given annually to the top women's soccer player in the nation.
Both the men's and women's teams wrap up the regular season this weekend. The men host Portland on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m. PT and Gonzaga on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. PT.
