SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Freshman forward
Keigo Kameya netted the go-ahead goal with nine minutes left in
regulation as Santa Clara University knocked off their West Coast
Conference rival the University of San Francisco 2-1 Friday
night.
Santa Clara (6-4-5, 3-0-4 WCC) remains unbeaten in league play.
The Broncos, who trailed at the half, received a free kick goal
from Wesley
Culver just after the intermission to swing the momentum.
"It was one of those typical WCC matchups," said Santa Clara head
coach Cameron Rast. "Both teams had a lot to play for. The first
half we were a bit deflated after their goal. After being down at
halftime, we went after them in the second half. We literally went
after them, and put them on their heels."
Culver's goal, his third of the year, came in the 46th
minute – just moments after halftime, scoring from 30 yards
out following a USF foul.
San Francisco (2-10-2, 0-6-1 WCC) is winless in WCC play and has
not won in eight outings. The Dons were welcoming back their 1980
NCAA Championship team Friday night, celebrating on the 30th
anniversary of that 22-0-2 season.
Kameya's unassisted goal in the closing moments was the decider,
helping SCU curb a trend of tying in three out of their last four
games – which included a 2-2 draw with USF two weeks ago in
Santa Clara.
The Broncos will have the rest of the weekend off before resuming
the WCC schedule next weekend in Southern California.
