Men's Soccer Falls In Close Match At No. 9 New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Bronco men's soccer team fell at No. 9 New Mexico in the 2013 TLC Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Lobo Invitational Friday night with a final score of 1-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 0-4-0 and the Lobos at 3-0-1.

The Lobos outshot the Broncos 15-6 and shots on goal 4-1. New Mexico's James Rogers scored the solo goal of the game, notching his fourth of the 2013 season. With the New Mexico student section crowding behind the Broncos net the whole game, goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh made three saves in the match.

The Broncos will compete in their second and final game of the tournament on Sun., Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. (Pacific) vs. Central Arkansas.

Central Arkansas dropped its game earlier in the day vs. No. 11 Cal State Northridge by a final score of 4-1. The Bears are 3-2-0 in the 2013 season with junior Logan Miller leading the team with 3 goals and 2 assists.

The Broncos brought some early excitement in the 11th min. of the game as Phillip Muscarella drove the ball down the right flank to give a cross in front of the goalmouth.  Bronco forward Carlos Montes was able to get on the end of it taking a shot that just missed the net.

A long through ball by the Broncos defense in the 53rd min. gave Keigo Kameya a break away run against the Lobos goalkeeper. Kameya tried to slot the ball to the far post but the shot went wide.

A low hard shot at the top of the Broncos box in the 60th min. by New Mexico's Calderon was headed straight for the left corner of the net before McIntosh made a diving save to push it away.

Five minutes later Calderon played the ball to Lobo teammate James Rogers at the top of the Bronco box for him to chip the ball far post just out of reach of McIntosh. The Lobos took the lead 1-0.

In the 75th min., McIntosh made a heroic diving kick save from a shot at point blank range from New Mexico's Josh Goss.

The Broncos battled throughout the game and made some good combination plays in their offensive half.

Game Notes: After a delay of game due to lightning, the match started at 6:57 p.m. (Pacific) … a yellow card caution was given to Santa Clara's Keigo Kameya, Parker Holland and Edson Cardona.
