SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Coming off a win against Central Arkansas last weekend, the Bronco men's soccer team (1-4-0) will travel down the Alameda to San Jose State to face the Spartans Thurs., Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
"We are anxious to continue to prove ourselves and anxious to get better," said Bronco Head Coach Cameron Rast. "We are on a mission to win games and now that we know we can win games we need to focus on winning while playing better and consistently the whole game. This game is going to be tough because it is a rivalry game, its on a long, narrow, turf field which will make the game very fast paced so I think it's a great opportunity to get better and produce a good result."
The Spartans hold an overall record of 0-4-1 in the 2013 season after dropping a road game 6-1 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Spartan freshman Rory Knibbs leads the team in points with one goal and one assist.
Last season when the two teams matched up, the Broncos fell 5-3 after the Spartans scored 4 goals in the second half. The loss marked the first for the Broncos against San Jose at Buck Shaw since 1985.
2013 Season Review Thus Far
Santa Clara is pegged to win the West Coast Conference as voted by WCC head coaches in preseason polls and predicts senior Mark Daus and Sophomore Ryan Masch to gain All-WCC team honors.
The Broncos started off slow as they fell in their first four matches against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, then-No. 19 University of Washington, Bay Area rival Stanford and then-No. 9 New Mexico making their record 0-4-0.
The Broncos claimed their first victory against Central Arkansas 2-0 with Keigo Kameya picking up is first goal of the season. The second goal was recorded as an own goal.
Senior Carlos Montes notched the men's first goal of the season in the Broncos home opener vs. SIUE. Montes leads the Broncos in shots (8) and shots on goal (4).
Freshman Holland Parker saw his first minutes as a Bronco when the men traveled up north to play at Washington. Parker was able to tally up his first collegiate goal that game against former Bronco goalkeeper, Ryan Herman.
