SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Bronco men's soccer team fell 1-0 to USF on an overtime game-winner. The loss puts the Broncos at 4-7-0 in the 2013 season and 1-2-0 in the West Coast Conference. The Dons stand at 4-4-2 in the season and 1-2-1 in conference.
The Broncos offense was hard at work outshooting the Dons 19-10 but drew even with six shots on the frame.
"The game can be cruel and tonight it was cruel to us," said Bronco head coach Cameron Rast. "We played well enough to win and created some of the clearest chances of the game to score and finish. We want to continue to create those chances and see if we can sink those and make the difference in the game. Unfortunately we couldn't find that moment. I think another thing is to stay positive. We did some really good things tonight and I feel good about the way we played."
The Broncos will continue conference play on Sun., Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's. St. Mary's holds a record of 4-4-3 in the 2013 season and 2-0-1 in conference. Adam Ismail leads the Gaels in points with three goals and one assist.
In the 14th min. of the game Bronco goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh made an exciting save as the USF forward tried to head the ball to the top corner of the goal.
Seven minutes later the Broncos countered as Harrison Hanley dribbled the ball into the Don's box taking on two defenders. Hanley was able to lay a cross off to the feet of Keigo Kameya whose shot was saved by San Francisco's goalkeeper Connor Gaal.
At the start of the second half, Edson Cardona ripped a shot from the top of the box in the 49th min. but was hit wide.
In the 69th min. the Dons took a free kick shot from the top of the Broncos' box for McIntosh to make a diving save.
The Broncos built up an impressive offensive attack in the 75th min. when Carlos Montes played the ball wide to Dylan Autran. Autran found Kameya inside the Don's box for a low shot on frame but was deflected away by Gaal for a Bronco corner kick.
After 90 minutes of regulation play the men headed into overtime where Brady Jimison scored the game-winner five minutes in making the final score 1-0 for the Dons.
Game Notes: A yellow card caution was issued to San Francisco's Vegard Karlsen … a yellow card caution was issued to Santa Clara's Mark Daus … attendance was 509.
