Broncos Battle to Overtime Victory

MORAGA, Calif. – The Bronco men's soccer team (5-7-0) took down the St. Mary's Gaels (4-5-3) with an overtime goal by Edson Cardona. The Broncos are now 2-2-0 in West Coast Conference play and the Gaels stand at 2-1-1.

The Broncos outshot the Gaels 12-10 and Bronco goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh picked up six saves.

"The guys played well after a tough result on Friday," said Bronco head coach Cameron Rast. "They were determined to make sure it didn't happen a second time. We created some good opportunities in the game and the commitment to the attack and to score is definitely improving."

The Broncos will continue their run for the conference title next weekend as they host Gonzaga on Fri., Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and host Portland on Sun., Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.

After dominating the first half in shots 9-3, the Broncos knocked in the first goal of the game in the 76th min. Jared Hegardt played a ball to Harrison Hanley who put in the back of the net to make the score 1-0.

Just 10 minutes later in the 86th min., the Gaels countered when Carlo Eikani broke free from the defense in the Broncos' box to finish a pass from Kendall Will.

After 90 minutes of regulation the men headed into overtime.

In the 97th min., Santa Clara's Cardona scored the game-winner. Mark Daus threw the ball in to Hanley who then laid it off to Cardona who put it away 10 yards out.

"A number of the guys played well tonight," continued Rast. "In particular, Edson Cardona and Harrison Hanley. I can't say enough about our defense, they keep us in games."
