SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After finishing up the 2013 season with a 2-0 victory over USD and a WCC record of 8-4-0 (11-9-0 overall), six players on the Santa Clara men's soccer team were named to the All-WCC Men's Soccer Teams. Carlos Montes picked up All-WCC First Team honors while Mark Daus and Harrison Hanley were named to the All-WCC Second Team. Bronco goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh was Honorable Mention and Edson Cardona and Parker Holland made a name for themselves in their rookie season being picked up on the All-Freshman Team. Montes, Daus and Hanley were all given College Sports Madness WCC honors with Daus being named to the First Team and Montes and Hanley being named to the Second Team.
Montes came in clutch for the Broncos several times scoring the game-winning goals at San Diego (Oct. 4), Portland (Nov. 1) and Gonzaga (Nov. 3). The senior forward finished the 2013 season with four goals for the Broncos and was named WCC Player of the Week on Nov. 4.
"Carlos was an important performer for us as the season went on, particularly in conference where he got some key game-winners," said Bronco head coach Cameron Rast. "There is no question that he dramatically influenced our team and our success. He had a good season, made a lot of good strides and was an important performer for us so I'm happy he was recognized for that."
Picking up Second Team honors, Daus started in every match (80) for the Broncos during his four-year span. The two-year team captain anchored the defense while making an impact offensively by scoring the game-winner at San Francisco (Nov. 10).
Hanley, also named to the Second Team, was an essential piece to the Broncos' WCC success. The senior forward kept the Broncos alive at Saint Mary's (Oct. 13) by scoring a goal in regulation and assisting the overtime game-winner in the same match. His key performance came vs. Gonzaga (Oct. 18) where he scored two goals to take down the Bulldogs 2-1. Hanley led the team with 14 points for his six goals and two assists.
"I think Mark should have gotten First Team recognition because of what he did for our team, he was one of the guys who really held our back together and was fantastic," continued Rast. "Harrison had his break out year and unfortunately we wont be able to get him back but we're very happy for him to have some really good performances and to be a big time contributor to our team. Both of these guys dramatically impacted the quality of our team and our success."
In his first season as the starting goalkeeper for the Broncos, McIntosh grew into one of the best keepers in the conference. Starting all 20 matches for the Broncos, McIntosh picked up six shutouts and 87 saves in the 2013 season (57 in WCC play).
"In so many ways, this was a freshman year for Kendall this year," said Rast. "This was a year of growth for him, a year of improvement, a year of really getting his feet under his play and as the season wore on he was getting better and better. I think towards the end of the season, he may have been the top goalkeeper in the conference."
In their first season with the Broncos, Cardona and Holland quickly found a spot in the starting line-up. Cardona, finishing the season with three goals and one assist, came up big for the Broncos at Saint Mary's (Oct. 13) scoring the game-winner in overtime. Holland was a solid holding midfielder for the Broncos during conference, proving he was ready for the higher level of play.
"Edson only played in half of our conference games but was for sure influential in that half," said Rast. "He's a player that can hold the ball and is really creative around the goal. He's someone that we're going to rely on going forward. Parker was also someone that came on as the season continued. He found a starting role, contributed greatly to our success and was someone that we needed a lot this year."
Glenn Vass and Max Ornstil were also honored by the WCC, being awarded WCC All-Academic Honors. Vass was selected to the All-Academic Team with a 3.62 GPA and Ornstil was Honorable Mention.
