Chaffin Preps for First Year as a Bronco

Written by Student Assistant Ben Dines '15

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Satoshi "Yoshi" Chaffin (YC) was born in Japan, and after several superb soccer years in Washington has now brought his talents to SCU.  He spoke with Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) about the upcoming year on the field and in school.

SCB: So your nickname is Yoshi … any connection to the green dinosaur from those video games?

YC: There isn't really a connection but some of my teammates say I kind of look like a Yoshi so that's pretty interesting. Yoshi has always been my nickname ever since I came over to the states and that's something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

SCB: What brought you to Santa Clara?

YC: The campus size was perfect; academics are excellent.  I love Buck Shaw and I wanted to go to a school that was known for their soccer program.

SCB: What are you nervous about coming to a whole new place with a new group of people?

YC: Not really nervous. It's really fun meeting new people and getting to know their backgrounds. I'm most nervous about going to class because I don't know what to expect. All I know is that it's going to be really hard.

SCB: What are you looking forward to during your freshman year at SCU?

YC: Winning the West Coast Conference Championship because with the players and coaching staff we have, we are very capable of getting first place in the conference.

SCB: What are you excited for outside of soccer?

YC: I'm most excited about checking out the Bay Area since I'm not from the area. It's always raining back home in Washington so it's nice to always see the sun out.
