Men's Soccer Drops Tightly Contested Match 1-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Fullerton, Calif.) – The Santa Clara men's soccer team dropped its second match of the year to Cal State Fullerton on Friday night by a score of 1-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 4-2-1 and the Titans 2-3-2 overall.

The Broncos return to the Mission Campus on Fri., Sept. 26 to host Bay Area rival Cal at 7 p.m.

"Tonight, we came in with some good confidence and faced a tough match," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "Defensively we did well and limited some options. We are still struggling because we need to work on dictating the game and being the team that is more aggressive and anticipating the ball. We were not sharp tonight and need to lift the performance moving forward. For the next match, we need to work on winning the ball and connecting our passes going into the attack. Against Cal, we look forward to being at home next weekend."

The host team outshot Santa Clara 10-4, with all four of the Broncos attempts coming in the second half. Santa Clara had one shot on goal while Fullerton tallied four, putting one in the back of the net in the 67th minute.

Freshman Carlos Delgadillo had one shot on goal while Edson Cardona, Ryan Masch and Steve Eneme took a shot against the Titans. Goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh collected three saves during the match.

Santa Clara had a good opportunity in the 33rd minute with a shot from Delgadillo. Fullerton outshot the Broncos 4-0 in the first half, but McIntosh tallied two saves for Santa Clara in the first 45 minutes. Both teams walked off the field at halftime scoreless.

The Broncos started off the second half defending a corner kick attempt by Fullerton that went of the head of the Titan's Colin Okirie and ended with a great save by McIntosh in the 46th minute. Not long after, Fullerton had another good chance from a breakaway that was broken up by Valdemar Andersen and Alfie Edmonds holding down the Bronco's defensive line.

After a good attempt from Cardona that went just wide, Fullerton's Ian Ramos chipped the ball to Garrett Losee just inside the 18-yard box. Losee chested the ball up and threw his whole body into a high side volley that went over McIntosh's head, landing in the back of the goal in the 67th minute.

Santa Clara responded with a strong offensive attack during the final 15 minutes of the match with multiple long throw in and corner kick attempts. Junior Ryan Macsh had a good look at the top of the box in the 75th minute that went just over the crossbar. Then in the 77th minute, Andersen sent in a free kick to the Titan's box that just missed the feet of Delgadillo for a possible scoring opportunity.

With three minutes remaining, Delgadillo put up a dangerous shot that was saved by the Fullerton goalkeeper and created a corner kick chance that the Titans defended well.

Santa Clara still leads the all-time series against Cal State Fullerton 11-8-2, but the Titans have broken the Broncos two-game winning streak in the series. The last time these two teams met in 2005, the Broncos beat the Titans, 1-0.

The Broncos return to Buck Shaw Stadium on Sept. 26 to take on Cal at 7 p.m.

Game Notes: Attendance was 600 … a total of five yellow card cautions were given.
