Men's Soccer Cannot Convert Against No. 23 Maryland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (College Park, Md.) – Up against a nonconference opponent in the middle of the season, the Santa Clara men's soccer team fell to No. 23 Maryland, 3-1, on Saturday night. The Broncos move to 5-6-3 while the Terrapins improve to 8-5-2 on the 2014 season.

The Broncos were outshot by the Terps 12-5 with Santa Clara tallying two shots on goal to Maryland's five. Sophomore Haru Kent scored his first goal of his collegiate career in the 83rd minute for the Broncos while Carlos Delgadillo put one other shot on frame. Goalkeeper and senior Carl Carrwik saw his first start of the season against Maryland and collected two saves over the 90 minutes. Maryland's goals came from George Campbell in the 58th minute, Jereme Raley off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute and Mael Corboz in the 78th minute from 25-yard free kick. 

Against Maryland, the Broncos put up a strong showing by holding the No. 23 team to a 0-0 score in the first half. Junior Ryan Masch put on the pressure offensively in the fourth minute with a strike that went just over the crossbar. Santa Clara got corner kick opportunities and more shots off within the next 20 minutes.

Santa Clara keeper Carrwik came up big in the 41st minute, denying Maryland's Sam Metzger with a dangerous strike and collecting his first save on the year.

The Broncos found themselves in a scoreless standstill after the first 45 minutes.

The second half brought a lot of excitement to the 2,300 fans in College Park. Maryland brought the momentum out of the locker room and put the first point on the board in the 58th minute. Mikey Ambrose found George Campbell who then took a strike at the top of the 18-yard box that went passed Carrwik.

Maryland went up 2-0 in the 72nd minute from Jereme Raley. Tsubasa Endoh's corner kick was redirected by David Kabelik and Raley was there to tap it in the net. Six minutes later, the Terps were up 3-0 when a free kick from 25 yards out went top self off of the foot of Corboz.

Santa Clara denied the shutout when Kent collected his first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute. Delgadillo crossed the ball across the front of goal when Kent tapped it passed Maryland's Zack Steffen to make the score 3-1.

The Broncos are back in action next weekend with West Coast Conference competition at Pacific on Oct. 31 and then at Saint Mary's on Nov. 2.

GAME NOTES: A total of two yellow cards were given … attendance was 2371.
