Eneme's Late Goal Gives Broncos the Tie on Senior Day

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Up against West Coast Conference opponent Loyola Marymount for the second time this season, the Santa Clara men's soccer team drew, 1-1, on Sunday after double overtime. The Broncos move to 6-7-4 on the season and 2-2-1 in the WCC while the Lions move to 8-4-5 and 2-1-2 in the WCC.

Looking forward, Santa Clara takes on Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.

The Broncos were outshot by the Lions, 15-12, with Santa Clara tallying two shots on goal to LMU's four. Redshirt freshman Steve Eneme scored his third goal of the season in the 87th minute for the Broncos within the 6-yard box while Edson Cardona put one chance on frame in his four attempts. Glenn Vass, Matt Steurer, Jared Hegardt and Satoshi Chaffin added to the Bronco offense. Goalkeeper Carl Carrwik collected his fourth start of the season against LMU and grabbed three saves during the double overtime match.

Loyola Marymount's goal came in the 53rd minute by Griffin Bell. Three other Lion's tallied shots on goal. Goalkeeper Paul Blanchette collected one save.

"We were missing some guys today and had to make some adjustments, but we did a good job moving the ball and getting into the right positions," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "I would like to have been a little more dangerous around goal. We need to work on our finishing. In this game, we needed to make all the right decisions to score goals. The best part for me is that the guys battled. They battled really hard today; even down a goal, they didn't give up."

Down a goal for the majority of regulation, Eneme's shot in the 87th minute gave the team its second wind. "Steve had a good goal, and he kept the game alive for us," said Rast after the match. "I was very glad to give Kyle Schumann his first minutes of the year today as well. Matt Escobar had a good performance in the end, defending and organizing well. I am proud of the new guys overall."

The visiting team got off to a strong start in the 20th minute with a counter-attack off of a Bronco free kick. Alvaro Madrigal of the Lion's dribbled down the center of the field and shot right at Carrwik to collect his first save. LMU kept up the attack in the 25th minute with a shot by Adrien Perez that went high.

A dangerous opportunity came in the 39th minute for the Broncos. Chaffin played a give-and-go with Eneme, and then found Steurer open in the right side of the box. Steurer hit it high. Hegardt responded for Santa Clara just two minutes later with another high shot.

Lifting the offense at the end of the first half, Eneme played a skillful volley to Steurer rushing into the right side of the 18. Steurer's shot went just wide, but the aggressive attack sent the team into the locker room with some momentum.

The Broncos and the Lions were scoreless at the half.

Chaffin started off the second half with a good look in the 49th minute. He took it down the field, beating a few LMU players. His shot attempt sailed wide.

LMU was almost able to get on the board with a dangerous corner kick in the 51st minute. Craig Nitti redirected the ball back into the middle of the 6-yard box, but the Santa Clara defense was able to clear it out of danger.

Just two minutes later, LMU was first to find the back of the net in the 53rd minute off of another corner kick. After it was taken, the ball bounced around the 6-yard box, hitting several different players, before Griffin Bell put it away for his second career goal.

Santa Clara kept up the pressure with a great effort by Chaffin when he collected a cross from Eneme in front of the goalie in the 57th minute. Slipping, Chaffin's shot went just wide. Senior Glenn Vass added to the offensive push by ripping a powerful strike in the 81st that had potential to tie up the match but sailed just wide right.

The Broncos' answer came in the 87th minute when Eneme was able to tie up the match on Senior Day. Max Ornstil took a shot that was blocked and bounced off the goalie and a defender to land in front of Eneme, who put it in the back of the net, making the score 1-1 to send it into overtime.

Each team had chances in the two overtime periods. Carrwik came up big in his final match at Buck Shaw with two critical saves: one in the 103rd that denied Dylan Seedman a header opportunity and in the 109th, denying Sebastian de Rada of a potential golden goal victory.

"It was great to have the seniors in the mix today," said Rast. "Carl had a good save in the end to keep the game from slipping away. Glenn was good in the first half for us. Victor battled for as long as he could and gave everything he could. I'm proud of them for giving all they could over the years. They have been great team guys. I'm very pleased for them."

The game ended, 1-1, after double overtime. Next up, Santa Clara takes on Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. on Thurs., Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.
