Delgadillo's Goal In Closing Moments Stuns No. 20 Cal

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Carlos Delgadillo scored with six minutes left to lift Santa Clara over No. 20 Cal 2-1 in a very entertaining match at Stevens Stadium.

Cameron Rast, Santa Clara's head coach, said earlier in the week that his team could play with anyone, and the Broncos (4-5-0) proved that Friday night with a top-20 win.

Cal (5-2-0) had won five straight, and dominated the game in the early stages. Applying pressure from the opening tap, Nick Lima navigated the SCU defense and delivered a cross to Aravind Sivakumar to give the Bears a lead just six minutes in.

Absorbing Cal's initial attack, Santa Clara settled in to play their best soccer of the season. Dylan Autran blasted-home an indirect free kick from the top of the penalty box in minute 25. Delgadillo would provide yet another highlight-reel goal to allow the Broncos to win in dramatic fashion.

Delgadillo (pictured) - the team's scoring leader as a freshman a year ago - has nine of SCU's 20 points this season.

"Tonight reaffirmed a couple things for us," said Rast. "That we are a certain type of team. A team that is going to compete for 90 minutes, but a team that likes to press, a team that likes to put teams under pressure and make them feel uncomfortable. We did that tonight and from there we gained confidence."

The Broncos rose to the occasion in the second half, allowing Cal's high-powered offense just four shots after the intermission, compared to the Bear's 10 in the first half. Cal was the nation's top scoring team last year, and came into the night having out-scored their opponents 14-3 during its five-game win streak

"It's all about consistency," added Rast. "We can pull off a great performance like this, but it's not about just winning one game. It is about being consistently good and playing well enough to win every game."

Santa Clara has certainly played well this season, but have let a few wins slip away by giving up second-half leads. Rast has put his team in pressure situations early and often this fall – which began with a trip to play No. 2 North Carolina and No. 15 Wake Forest.

Up next are two road games, first at San Jose State next Thursday, Oct. 1, then at t No. 9 Akron Tuesday, Oct. 6.
