Men's Soccer Hosts Sacramento State in Final Exhibition

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After a trip to Chula Vista and an exhibition against San Diego State on Wednesday, the Santa Clara men's soccer team will turn its attention to Sacramento State. The two squads will square off on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT at Stevens Stadium on Buck Shaw Field.

In the first tune-up of the season, the Broncos fell 3-2 to the Aztecs in a 100-minute exhibition in San Diego on Wednesday morning. The Broncos got goals from senior Edson Cardona and sophomore Andres Jimenez. Santa Clara outshot SDSU, 10-6 and earned six corner kicks to their three.

"The Sacramento State game is the second exhibition for us so it should be mirroring more closely of what we're trying to do in the regular season," head coach Cameron Rast said. "We had a good matchup with San Diego State down there. That game taught us a lot, we learned a lot from it. We had some good performances and played well for good stretches. For this game, we want to build on that. We want to see if we can improve on the performance at SDSU and then sharpen some of the details that maybe weren't as good as they needed to be. Sacramento State will be another great opportunity for us to improve, to learn about group and be ready for our first match with Wisconsin."

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara ended the 2015 season with a record of 11-8-1 and 5-1-1 record in conference play to claim the program's fifth (2003, 2006, 2007, 2010) league title under Rast and 20th all-time. Under Rast, the 2015 WCC Coach of the Year, the team advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament but lost to Stanford, the eventual NCAA Champions.

Despite missing three games due to injury, junior forward Carlos Delgadillo was the leading scorer for the team and the conference in 2015 with 10 goals. Delgadillo also dished out the most assists of the returning Broncos with four. Delgadillo and junior defender Valdemar Andersen were All-WCC first team honorees. Also returning to the squad is sophomore defender Luis Urias, the reigning WCC Freshman of the Year. Senior defender Parker Holland earned all-conference honorable mention honors while sophomore midfielder Matthew Sipowicz garnered WCC All-Freshman team accolades.

The Broncos will have a void to fill in goal with 2015 WCC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kendall McIntosh graduating. Rast and associate head coach Eric Yamamoto, who coaches the goalkeepers, have four goalkeepers to choose from heading into the season.

THE HORNETS
Sacramento State has played one exhibition already this season, falling to No. 1 Stanford, 5-0. In 2015, the Hornets went 6-10-2 (3-6-1 conference) but they return nine of 11 starters. The team's leading goal scorer, Brad Bumgarner returns after putting in seven goals last season. Ivan Ramirez is back for his senior season after leading the team in assists in 2015 with six.
