SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer pulled out a hard-fought victory over San Jose State on Wednesday night. Junior Satoshi "Yoshi" Chaffin's goal in the 103rd minute gave the Broncos a 1-0 win.

In the 102nd minute, San Jose State (1-6-2) fired a shot low that sophomore goalkeeper Dakota Havlick had to parry away. On the counter attack, junior Carlos Delgadillo was fouled but he quickly played the ball in and found Chaffin in space on the left wing. Chaffin beat his defender and carried the ball into the 18-yard box, firing a low shot into the side net at the far post at the 103:04 mark. The goal was Chaffin's second of the season and of his career. It was the first assist of the season for Delgadillo.

Havlick and the Broncos (5-3) have allowed just five goals on the year and posted four shutouts in their eight games.

In the first overtime period, the Broncos created multiple chances but were unable to convert. Delgadillo had a header go just wide of the target and senior Ryan Masch took a set piece that was brilliantly saved. San Jose State's Darren Sinclair was presented his second yellow card at the 99:52 mark (first card at 49:56), leaving the Spartans down a man.

For the sixth time in eight games, it was scoreless after the first 45 minutes. The Broncos took seven shots but only one was on target. The best chance came from sophomore Andres Jimenez who fired a shot off a cross from Chaffin but the Spartan goalkeeper made a strong diving save. The Spartans did not register a shot or corner kick in the half.

The second half began with senior Ryan Masch taking a shot from about 30 yards out that beat the goalkeeper but drilled the crossbar.

Yellow cards were assessed to Santa Clara's seniors James Huffer (19:42) and Matt Steurer (88:10).

The Broncos head back on the road to face UAB in the final non-conference match of the season on Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. PT.
