SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer opens the 2017 season Thursday at 7:30 p.m. with a tough test in No. 6 Maryland.
In their two exhibition games, the Broncos went 0-1-1. At Sacramento State, they fell 1-0 but came back with a 2-2 draw at San Jose State Sunday. Valdemar Andersen and Satoshi Chaffin scored the Bronco goals.
SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 1-3 all-time against Maryland with the last meeting coming in 2014. The then-No. 23 Terrapins won in College Park 3-1. The lone Bronco victory in the series came in 1998 at home 1-0.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara returns three of its four All-WCC honorees from a year ago in Valdemar Andersen, Carlos Delgadillo, and Jalani Ambrose. Anderson nabbed second team honors, Delgadillo was honorable mention, and Ambrose was named to the freshman team.
The Broncos return every goal scorer from last year except one. Delgadillo led the team and Yoshi Chaffin finished second in finding the back of the net.
Dakota Havlick played 14 games in goal while allowing 14 goals for a 1.02 GAA. He collected 43 saves and a .754 save percentage while registering four shutouts.
THE TERRAPINS
Maryland went 18-1-2 and 7-0-1 in the ACC in 2016. They were the top seed in the NCAA Tournament but got upset by Providence 5-4 at home in the second round.
The Terrapins outscored opponents 53-24 on the season and held a 148-84 advantage in shots on goal. They drew 118 corner kicks and surrendered just 66.
Gordon Wild led the team with 17 goals last season and returns for his junior campaign. Wild added five assists for 39 points. Amar Sejdic led the way with nine assists and was second with nine goals for 27 points.
Maryland has no returners that saw time in goal last year.
NOTES
- Before heading to Sacramento State to begin their exhibitions, the Broncos went on a team retreat to Lake Tahoe, beginning Aug. 14. While there, they trained and took part in team building exercise. The team building featured Dean McKay, Ph.D. McKay helped the Broncos with goal alignment that helped them better understand and fall in line with their roles for the upcoming season.

Parking: For weekday matches, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to kickoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to Stevens Stadium on Palm Drive.
