Men's Soccer Battles No. 6 Maryland but Falls in Season-Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – With a tough test right off the bat, Santa Clara men's soccer battled against No. 6 Maryland Friday night at Stevens Stadium but eventually fell 4-2.

The Broncos stunned the Terrapins with an early goal and were able to hold the lead for more than half of the first period before the Maryland (1-0) offense got things going and scored three goals before the end of the half.

After Brandon Gillingham got the scoring started for Santa Clara (0-1) in the third minute off a failed clear, the Terrapins evened the score in the 27th minute when Eryk Williamson took advantage of a rebound.

Towards the end of the half the Maryland added two more goals in just over two minutes to take a 3-1 lead. In the 38th minute Eric Matzelevich scored on an assist from Jake Rozhansky and in the 40th Rozhansky added one on an assist from Williamson.

Valdemar Andersen got the Broncos back in it by cutting the deficit to 3-2 in the 78th minute off of a free kick. He took the chance from just outside the box and knocked it into the right side of the goal.

Despite continued pressure from Santa Clara, Maryland added an insurance goal in the 88th to put the game away.
