Men's Soccer Falls to West Virginia Sunday Night

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer concluded the opening weekend of the regular season with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Virginia Sunday night at Stevens Stadium.

West Virginia (2-0) scored early and added another goal midway through the first half for all the scoring in the game. Santa Clara (0-2) was able to create some chances but couldn't come through with a finisher.

The Mountaineers scored in the ninth minute when Brendan Hogan served a ball to Jad Arlsan who got behind the defense and was able to beat the keeper.

West Virginia added another goal in the 24th minute as Sebastian Garcia-Herreros sent a ball across the box to Jorge Quintanilla who gathered it and finished far post.

The Broncos held a decisive edge in shots, 18-4, and 8-0 in the second half while also putting five shots on goal to three for the Mountaineers.

Santa Clara's best chance came in the 67th minute when Dylan Caton got the rebound from his own shot and fired it back towards the goal. A West Virginia defender was in the right place and was able to clear the ball. 

NOTES

  • Seamus Hudnut made his first career start in goal and made one save.
  • Keanu Mendoza started his first game of the season.
  • Caton led the team with four shots and put two on goal. Javier Ruiz Duran attempted three shots and put two on frame.
  • Both teams drew one corner kick apiece and were each called for offsides once.
