SEATTLE – Despite finding the equalizer twice in the second half, Santa Clara men's soccer fell at Seattle 5-2 Thursday night.
Cody Gibson led the Redhawks (5-1) with a hat trick in a match that saw six goals scored in the second half. The Broncos (0-6) gritty effort wasn't enough to stop Seattle from its 21st consecutive victory at home.
Minutes after Valdemar Andersen had tied the game at 2-all on a penalty kick, Gibson put the Redhawks on top for good in the 67th minute. After a ball was deflected to him, Gibson took a hard shot that hit off a defender and into the goal to make it 3-2.
Seattle took its second lead of the night in the 53rd at 2-1. As the ball was knocked around in the box, it went straight to the foot of Sergio Rivas who hit a low shot off the left post and in.
Just 36 seconds into the second half, the Broncos responded after allowing a penalty kick in the 40th minute that was the lone goal in the first period. After a cross wasn't finished, Satoshi Chaffin got the ball on the left side of the box and rocketed a shot into the back of the net.
Gibson completed his hat trick in the 73rd and Alex Roldan added the fifth goal of the night on a shot from 25-yards out that he curled into the upper-right corner of the net.
