SEATTLE – Santa Clara men's soccer nearly came back from a three-goal second half deficit Sunday afternoon at Washington but ended up falling 4-3.

Despite finding themselves down 4-1 with less than 10 minutes to go, the Broncos (0-7) showed their fight and scored two goals in seven minutes but couldn't come up with the equalizer despite applying pressure to the Huskies (5-2) defense.

Carlos Delgadillo started the comeback attempt when he ran onto a pass from Miles Robinson in the 80th minute and got Santa Clara a goal closer with his second of the year.

Then, in the 87th, Nate Shue volleyed a loose ball into the back of the net for his first career goal to get the Broncos within one.

Santa Clara had one last shot attempt in the 88th by Robinson but it was blocked.

Hanwalla Bwana had a hat trick for the Washington and only a save by Santa Clara keeper Aran O'Brien, who came on in the ninth minute due to an injury to starter Henning Jolivet, on a penalty kick kept the Huskies midfielder from a four-goal performance.

Bwana started the scoring in the 16th minute when he slipped behind the defense on a through ball from Blake Bodily. One-on-one with the keeper, Bwana slipped his shot under O'Brien.

He finished the hat trick with a pair of goals off set pieces in the second half. In the 54th, he curved in a corner kick and in the 65th he placed a free kick from just outside the box into the upper-right corner of the net.

Less than 30 seconds before the half, the Huskies broke a 1-all tie and took the lead for good. After a header shot was blocked, Bodily took advantage of the rebound and found the back of the net.

A Santa Clara corner in the 31st minute led to a scramble in front of the net. Satoshi Chaffin found the ball at his feet and he was able to tie the game at 1-all.

NOTES

• Santa Clara is now 9-8-1 all-time against Washington.
• This was the Broncos second consecutive match against a team receiving votes in the top-25. Seattle also received votes this week.
• The Broncos offensive output was a season-high.
• Henning Jolivet started for the fourth consecutive game but had to leave in the ninth minute with an injury.
• Chaffin scored for the second game in a row.
• Delgadillo's goal put him in a tie for 10th all-time at Santa Clara.
