Men's Soccer Defeated by Cal's Second Half Hat Trick

BERKELEY, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer was defeated by Cal 3-2 Friday afternoon on the road.

The Broncos (0-8) held a 1-0 lead at the break but Paul Salcedo had a hat trick in the second half to lead the Bears (5-2) to their fourth consecutive win.

Salcedo's first goal came in the 60th minute when Shinya Kadono got a rebound off a blocked shot and passed it back to Salcedo who tied the score at 1-all.

Jose Carerra-Garcia set up the second goal of the match for Salcedo in the 67th and gave Cal its first lead of the match.

Salcedo finished his hat trick in the 85th to give Cal a short-lived 3-1 lead. Off the ensuing kick-off, Satoshi Chaffin made it 3-2 just 16 seconds later.

Santa Clara got the scoring started in the 32nd minute. Javier Ruiz Duran centered a ball to Carlos Delgadillo who one-timed a shot from inside the six-yard box to make it 1-0.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 13-31-8 all-time vs. Cal.
  • Henning Jolivet was back in net for his fifth consecutive start after leaving the last match in the opening minutes with an injury. He finished with a career-high five saves.
  • Carlos Delgadillo is now tied for ninth all-time at Santa Clara with 21 career goals. Jamil Walker (2000-02) also scored 21. Next up is Peter Lowry (2004-07) at No. 8 with 22.
