Men’s Soccer Falls 4-3 In Overtime To Pacific

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer lost a heartbreaker, 4-3, in overtime to Pacific for its first conference loss of the season on Wednesday night at Stevens Stadium.  

 

The Broncos dropped its record to 2-10-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play while the Tigers improved to 9-3-0, 1-1-0 WCC.  

 

Just two minutes into overtime, the Tigers netted the game winner when Camden Riley settled a corner kick with his chest inside the six and found the back of the net with his left foot, completing a comeback from being two goals down in the second half.  

 

After an evenly contested match in the first half with the match tied 1-1, the Broncos got off to a quick start in the second half scoring a pair of goals in the first six minutes.

 

In the 49th minute, Valdemar Andersen buried a penalty kick shot, his third in three tries this season to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.  The goal moved him into a tie with Carlos Delgadillo for the team lead in goals with five.  

 

Two minutes later, Javier Ruiz Duran took a feed from Sam Agosti inside the box, spun around to his left and scored with his left foot to increase Santa Clara's advantage to 3-1.  

 

However, less than a minute later in the 51st minute, Pacific's Tariq Branche cut into the Bronco lead, 3-2, back heeling a pass from Alfredo Alcala.  The same duo tied the match up in the 63rd minute, this time with Alcala sending a long pass just over the Bronco defender to the feet of Tariq Branche who chipped it past Santa Clara goalkeeper Dakota Havlick.  

 

The Tigers held a decided edge in the second half, outshooting the Broncos 11-to-5 and holding a 7-to-2 edge in the number of corner kicks.  It was an aggressiveness they would carry into overtime.  

 

 

• In the pregame, former Bronco goalkeeper and 1994 Santa Clara Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Terry Weekes was honored with a jersey ceremony.  

• Santa Clara is now 15-4-4 all-time against Pacific

• Andersen's goal was the third consecutive game that he has scored a goal, following a penalty kick goal against Saint Mary's last weekend and a free kick goal in the match against San Francisco. 

 

The Broncos travels to San Diego in a nonconference matchup against Mountain West's San Diego State on Sat., Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.
