Men’s Soccer Falls, 2-1, to UAB in Double Overtime
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer fell to UAB, 2-1, in double overtime on a penalty kick goal by Eder Mora on Sunday evening at Stevens Stadium.  Three minutes into the second overtime, Bronco freshmen defender Emil Christensen was called for a foul inside the penalty area taking down a Blazer in what was the last of 21 fouls called on the Bronco side compared to seven for UAB.

"In the end it was difficult.  I thought we were in good positions and tried to make good plays but we have to learn from that.  We have to understand what is important when and where.  So that becomes our next big test and our area of growth," said Broncos head coach Cam Rast.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the pace of the match picked up in the second 45 minutes with each team credited with nine shots apiece in the second half.  Santa Clara (1-1) got on the scoring column in the 52nd minute, when sophomore Alan Camacho Soto took a pass from senior captain Brandon Gillingham from 25 yards out, turned and fired the ball low, deflecting off a Blazer defender to beat UAB goalkeeper James Teal in the lower left corner.

"It was a great press for us where we picked off the ball, slipped it and Alan just let one have it.  He's always a guy that looks to shoot and that's what we love about him.  That's what a center forward does.  It caught a little bit of a deflection and maybe wrong footed the keeper a little bit and slid into the slide.  It put us in a great spot but its something we need to learn how to hold out on," said Rast.

For Soto, a transfer from Temple, it was his first goal as a Bronco after recording his first assist on Friday night against San Diego State.

UAB (1-1) quickly answered with the equalizer in the 56th minute on a header by Aidan O'hara that looped over the outstretched arms of Bronco goalkeeper Dakota Havlick.

"The UAB player got a head on it and I think Dakota was trying to come in but it popped over his head and into the far post.  We'll look at it on film and know that we probably could have adjusted our position and then be in a little better spot," said Rast.

The score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation and through the first overtime until the penalty was called on Christensen in the 103rd minute.
