SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer will look to pick up its first road win of the season when it plays the last of five consecutive road matches on Tuesday at Cal Poly (2-3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT.
Cal Poly is coached by former Santa Clara head coach Steve Sampson who led the Broncos to the 1989 NCAA Co-Championship with current Bronco head coach Cam Rast and associate head coach Eric Yamamoto as stalwart players.
During the current stretch of road matches, the Broncos have lost a pair in overtime and in the last two, the game turned on penalty kicks. Against Missouri State on Sept. 10, the Broncos missed the game winner in first extra session before falling 3-2 in double overtime and in last Saturday's match at No. 17 UC Davis, the penalty kick which would have tied the game, was saved by the Aggie goalkeeper late in the match before losing 3-1.
Against the nationally ranked UC Davis, the Broncos had a season-high 17 shots, nine of which were on frame against an Aggie defense which had given up only 0.67 goals entering the match.
THE MUSTANGS
Cal Poly (2-3-1) is coming off playing five straight road matches going 1-3-1 during that stretch getting a 2-0 win in the last match at CSU Bakersfield. Tuesday's match against Santa Clara is only the second match at home this season where the Mustangs beat Division II Fresno Pacific, 4-1, in the season opener.
Three of the road contests came against West Coast Conference schools, finishing with a scoreless draw at Gonzaga (Aug. 27) followed by a pair of losses at Portland (Sept. 3), 2-1, and at Saint Mary's (Sept. 9), 4-0.
Sampson is in his fourth year with the Mustangs compiling an overall record of 25-27-10. Last season, Cal Poly finished 7-10-1 and returns 16 letterwinners from that squad including six starters and six of the top 10 goal scorers.
Senior captain Simon Boehme returns in goal for Cal Poly and was named All-Big West honorable mention in 2017 after finishing 40th among NCAA Division goalkeepers with 4.43 saves per match. This season, Boehme has a 1.62 goals against average making 29 saves in six matches with a .784 save percentage.
Six different Mustangs have scored a goal this season led by Emmanuel Perez and Sean Goode who have two goals each. Perez also has two assists to his credit and leads the team with six points.
SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 6-1 all-time against UC Davis with the first meeting coming in 1980. The two schools last met in 2015 when Broncos won 1-0 at home.

Preseason
• Javier Ruiz Duran led the team with two goals in the preseason, scoring a goal in each of the two contests.
• Alan Camacho Soto got on the score sheet in each of the preseason contests, scoring a goal against Sacramento State and recording an assist against San José State.
Road Warriors
• Santa Clara plays 11 of its 17 regular season matches on the road this season. The match against Cal Poly will be the Broncos fifth consecutive road match.
• The Broncos play four 2017 NCAA Tournament teams on the road (Old Dominion, VCU, Pacific and San Francisco) and one at home (Cal).
• After the season opening home stand, the Broncos plays seven of its next eight matches on the road including traveling to four states (Virginia, Missouri, Georgia and Ohio) from Aug. 31 to Oct. 2.
Game-Winners
• Jimenez scored the game winner in the last two Broncos wins against a pair of teams from San Diego dating back to last season. In the 2018 season opener, the senior from Gilroy, California scored the game winner on a penalty kick in the 64th minute against San Diego State. In last season's final game against San Diego, Jimenez scored the game winner in the 85th minute to give the Broncos a 1-0 win.
Clean Sheets
• Havlick has recorded a clean sheet in three of the last nine matches, dating back to last season. The senior captain has seven career shutouts including one in the 2018 season opener.
Impact Newcomers
• The freshmen trio of Aasen, Christensen and Carter all started the first six matches of the season on the backline.
• Sophomore transfer Alan Camacho Soto (from Temple) and freshman Julian Bravo have come off the bench to play in all matches this season.
• Camacho Soto is the lone Bronco who has been on the scoring sheet in the first two matches – he recorded an assist in the season opener against San Diego State and scored a goal in the second match versus UAB.
• Carter and Bravo each scored their first goal as a Bronco in Monday's double overtime loss against Missouri State.
• Eduardo Lopez Perez made his Bronco debut against ODU, logging 34 minutes. The freshman from San Jose, California has seen increased playing time since his debut with 41 minutes against VCU, 68 minutes against Missouri State and 77 minutes against UC Davis getting his first starting nod.

Overtime Matches
• The Broncos are 0-3 in overtime matches this season, all coming within the last five matches. Santa Clara lost: 2-1 at home against UAB (Aug. 26) in the 103rd minute of double overtime; 1-0 in the 97th minute of overtime at VCU (Sept. 2) and 3-2 in the 108th minutes of double overtime at Missouri State (Sept. 10).
Miscellaneous
• With the season opening win against San Diego State, Broncos head coach Cam Rast improved his record in season openers to 9-8 including 4-4 at home.
• The season opening win was the first since 2014 when the Broncos beat Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2, in overtime. It was also the last road-opening win.
• Including the preseason, Ruiz Duran scored a goal in the first three matches this season, a streak that was broken in the match against UAB.
• Havlick, Carter and Gillingham have all gone the distance playing every minute of the first six contests (576:56 minutes) this season.
• The Broncos have scored five of its six goals in the second half.
'State' Schools
• The season opener against San Diego State was the third consecutive match the Broncos faced a "State" school. Santa Clara's first two preseason matches came against Sacramento State and San José State.
