SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After playing five consecutive road matches, Santa Clara men's soccer returns home to Stevens Stadium to host Cal on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
Since the season opening weekend in late August, the Broncos have traversed through multiple time zones playing against a pair of 2017 NCAA tournament teams in Old Dominion and VCU, followed by a trip to Missouri State before playing a couple of in-state schools, UC Davis and Cal Poly, last week.
The Broncos finished with a 1-4 record on the road but ended on a high note by winning the last outing at Cal Poly, 2-0, on Tuesday night.
Cal (4-1-2) is the third 2017 NCAA tournament team that the Broncos are playing in this young season with the lone loss coming against preseason West Coast Conference favorite, Pacific, 2-1. The match in Stockton, California was the only true road game the Bears have played thus far. The Bears also played a neutral site match against Sacramento State at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.
THE BEARS
Saturday's match will close out the nonconference portion of the schedule for the Bears before kicking off its 10 match Pac-12 schedule.
Cal is led by head coach Kevin Grimes who is in his 19th year with the program compiling a 189-122-40 record. The Bears are coming off a 11-7 record in 2017 including a 6-4 conference record to finish second in the league to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
The Bears bring back 13 letterwinners including six returners and 12 newcomers. Three of the newcomers were ranked among the Top Drawer Soccer Top 100 – Defenders JJ Foe Nuphaus (No. 39) and Ian Lonergan (No. 61) and midfielder Taylor Davila (No. 66). Nuphaus is also a member of the U.S. U19 National Team.
Junior goalkeeper Drake Callender, an All-Pac-12 First Team pick last season, was named to the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List in the preseason. This season, Callender is 4-1-2 and has allowed seven goals in 675 minutes for a 0.93 goals against average while recording a .720 save percentage with two clean sheets to his credit.
Along with Callender, senior midfielder Shinya Kadono was named to the preseason All-Pac-12 team. Kadono leads the Bears with seven goals and 16 points including a four goal, nine point outburst against Sacramento State.
SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 13-31-8 all-time against Cal with the first meeting coming in 1967. The two schools last met in 2017 when the Bears won 3-2 in Berkeley. The Broncos held a 1-0 lead at the break on a goal from Carlos Delgadillo but Paul Salcedo had a hat trick in the second half to lead the Bears.

• Andres Jimenez has scored the game winner in the last three Broncos wins dating back to last season.

• In the 2018 season opener, Jimenez scored the game winner on a penalty kick in the 64th minute against San Diego State to help the Broncos to a 2-0 win.
• In last season's final game against San Diego, Jimenez scored the game winner in the 85th minute to give the Broncos a 1-0 win.
Clean Sheets
• The Bronco goalkeepers have recorded a clean sheet in four of the last 10 matches, dating back to last season.
• Dakota Havlick is credited with three of the shutouts including one this season in the season opener against San Diego State and seven in his career.
• Redshirt sophomore Henning Jolivet earned his first win as a Bronco on Tuesday, shutting out Cal Poly.
Impact Newcomers
• The freshmen trio of Martin Aasen, Emil Christensen and Sakari Carter have started in all matches this season on the backline.
• Sophomore transfer Alan Camacho Soto (from Temple) and freshman Julian Bravo have played in all matches this season.

Miscellaneous
• With the season opening win against San Diego State, Broncos head coach Cam Rast improved his record in season openers to 9-8 including 4-4 at home.
• The season opening win was the first since 2014 when the Broncos beat Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2, in overtime. It was also the last road-opening win.
• Carter and Gillingham have all gone the distance playing every minute of the first seven contests (666:56 minutes) this season.
'State' Schools
• The season opener against San Diego State was the third consecutive match the Broncos faced a "State" school. Santa Clara's first two preseason matches came against Sacramento State and San José State.
• The Broncos faced Missouri State on Sept. 10 and will face another 'State' school in Georgia State (Sept. 29).
