SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer scored three goals in a span of 10 minutes with junior Miles Robinson knocking in a pair to help Santa Clara men's soccer to its first West Coast Conference win of the season, beating Gonzaga 3-1 on Friday night.
Santa Clara (5-8-1, 1-3 WCC) opened up the scoring in the 41st minute on an own goal by Gonzaga's Theo O'Malley. Bronco Javier Ruiz Duran's attempt to slip through the ball inside the 18 was misdirected by O'Malley into the goal getting past the Bulldog goalkeeper Ben Willis who was leaning the other way.
It looked as though the score would hold 1-0 heading into halftime but Robinson intercepted a poorly hit goal kick by Willis 25-yards from goal and fired a bullet low to the far post to add to the Broncos lead, 2-0.
Robinson struck again in the 51st minute on an opportunistic goal finding the back of the net off a rebound save by Willis. The Broncos had a pretty lead up to the goal with crisp passing resulting in Andres Jimenez delivering a pass infront of the goal that Eduardo Lopez Perez left for Ruiz Duran who was running behind to shoot. The left-footed shot was saved by a diving Willis but it bounced right back to Robinson who made it 3-0.
The Bulldogs (2-11-2, 0-4 WCC) got a goal in the 56th minute on Austin Giftopoulos' header off Isaiah Jackson's free kick to make it 3-1 where the scored remained until the final whistle.
Santa Clara returns to action on Sunday on Senior Night when it hosts No. 7 Portland. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the Senior Night ceremony preceding at around 6:45 p.m.
• Santa Clara is now 22-10-4 all-time against Gonzaga.
• It was Robinson's first two goal game as a Bronco.
