SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer concludes its 2018 season aptly on the road at San Diego on Friday, playing its 11th away contest out of 17 matches this season. The Broncos have a 2-7-1 road record on the year with its wins coming at Cal Poly and Georgia State.
Santa Clara (5-10-1, 1-5 WCC) will look to finish its 2018 campaign on a high note after coming off a 3-1 loss at San Francisco last Saturday. The Broncos jumped to an early 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match on a Javier Ruiz Duran goal, his team-leading sixth of the season, but conceded three unanswered second half goals to fall, 3-1.
Friday's game will be the last for seniors Brandon Gillingham, Dakota Havlick, Andres Jimenez and Matt Sipowicz in a Bronco uniform. Gillingham, Jimenez and Sipowicz were part of the 2015 squad that won the West Coast Conference championship with Havlick joining a year later after transferring from UCLA.
THE TOREROS
San Diego (7-7-4, 3-1-2 WCC) sits in fourth place in the WCC standings with 11 points, trailing Pacific and San Francisco by a point for second place. Head coach Brian Quinn is in his first year as the head coach of the Toreros, taking over for Seamus McFadden who served as the head coach for the first 39 years of the program.
The Toreros offense are paced by Miguel Berry with 14 points including a team-high eight goals and two assists. Berry has accounted for more than half of the team's goals having 15 goals as a team.
Defensively, San Diego has conceded 23 goals on the season. Matt Wiher has started 15 of the 18 matches with a 0.85 goals against average and .829 save percentage along with four clean sheets to his credit.
SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 33-14-4 all-time against San Diego with the first meeting coming in 1981. The two schools last met in 2017 on Senior Night with the Broncos winning 1-0 on a late goal by Andres Jimenez in the 85th minutes.

• Andres Jimenez scored the game winner in three consecutive Bronco wins dating back to last season until the Cal match (Sept. 22) when an own goal in overtime by a Cal defender helped Santa Clara get a win.
• In the game against Cal Poly (Sept. 18), Jimenez's goal 41 seconds into the match turned out to be the game winner in the 2-0 win.
• In the 2018 season opener, Jimenez scored the game winner on a penalty kick in the 64th minute against San Diego State to help the Broncos to a 2-0 win.
• In last season's final game against San Diego, Jimenez scored the game winner in the 85th minute to give the Broncos a 1-0 win.
Quick Goal
• Andres Jimenez scored 41 seconds into the match against Cal Poly for the second quickest goal scored in Bronco history. Back on Sept. 17, 1991, Alberto Cruz scored the quickest goal, just 29 seconds into the match against CS Sacramento.
Impact Newcomers
• Freshman Sakari Carter has started in all matches this season on the backline.
• Freshman Emil Christensen has started in all but one match this season on the backline. Christensen missed the match against LMU (Oct. 7).
• Freshman Martin Aasen has played in all but two matches on the backline missing the matches against Cal (Sept. 22) and San Francisco (Nov. 3).
• Sophomore transfer Alan Camacho Soto (from Temple) has played in all matches this season.
• Camacho Soto is second on the team in assists (4) and tied for second in points (10). He scored a pair of goals including the game-winner at Georgia State (Sept. 29) in the Broncos 2-1 win.

• Eduardo Lopez Perez made his Bronco debut against ODU (Aug. 31) in the third match of the season and has played in each match since then including starting the last eight. Lopez Perez scored his first goal against Cal (Sept. 22) to tie the match up at 2-2 to send it to overtime. Lopez Perez notched his second goal against Xavier (Oct. 2).
• Defender Alejandro Perez logged 69 minutes in his Bronco debut against Xavier (Oct. 2). The freshman from Roseville, California came in as a substitute in the 41st minute and played the rest of the match. Perez made his first Bronco start in the next match against LMU (Oct. 7) playing all 90 minutes and has started every game since.
• The Broncos started an all freshmen backline in two of the last four matches with Perez, Carter, Christensen and Aasen. Sophomore Terrell Smith started in place of Aasen in the match against Portland (Oct. 28) and San Francisco (Nov. 3).
• Freshman Alejandro Barajas made his season debut against San Francisco (Nov. 3) and was credited with two shots including one on frame.

• Six players have played in all games this season: Andres Jimenez, Javier Ruiz Duran, Miles Robinson, Alan Camacho Soto, Sakari Carter and Brandon Gillingham.

• Santa Clara lost the first three overtime matches: 2-1 at home against UAB (Aug. 26) in the 103rd minute of double overtime; 1-0 in the 97th minute of overtime at VCU (Sept. 2) and 3-2 in the 108th minutes of double overtime at Missouri State (Sept. 10) before winning against Cal (Sept. 22), 3-2, in the 93rd minute.
• The Broncos played to a 3-3 draw against Xavier (Oct. 2).
• Santa Clara lost the last two matches in overtime at Pacific (Oct. 13) and at Saint Mary's (Oct. 21).
Close Calls
• Against UAB (Aug. 26), the Broncos lost, 2-1, three minutes into double overtime on a penalty kick.
• The Broncos lost, 1-0, in overtime against VCU (Sept. 2).
• Against Missouri State (Sept. 10), the Broncos missed a penalty kick with three seconds remaining in the first overtime, before losing, 3-2, in double overtime.
• Santa Clara lost to UC Davis (Sept. 15), 3-1, after its penalty kick was kick saved by the Aggie goalkeeper in the 79th minute, which would have tied the match.
• With two minutes remaining in double overtime against Xavier (Oct. 2), two Bronco shots hit the post, and settled for a 3-3 draw.
• In the WCC opener against LMU (Oct. 7), leading 1-0, the Broncos gave up two goals in the final two minutes including the game-winner with 29 seconds to lose, 2-1.
• Against Pacific (Oct. 13), the Broncos missed a penalty kick in the 59th minute, which would have given them a 3-2 lead, in a match it would eventually lose in double overtime.
• SCU lost to No. 2 Saint Mary's (Oct. 21) in the 97th minute of overtime, 2-1.
Miscellaneous
• The Broncos have faced three opponents for the first time in its history this season: Old Dominion (Aug. 31), Missouri State (Sept. 10) and Georgia State (Sept. 29).
• Javir Ruiz Duran and Miles Robinson scored two goals in a game for the first time in their Bronco careers this season. Ruiz Duran against Pacific (Oct. 13) and Robinson against Gonzaga (Oct. 26).
'State' Schools
• The season opener against San Diego State was the third consecutive match the Broncos faced a "State" school. Santa Clara's first two preseason matches came against Sacramento State and San José State.
