SAN DIEGO – In a fitting end to its 2018 season, Santa Clara men's soccer match against San Diego went into overtime, its eighth match in extra session this season, and finished with a 1-1 draw in the West Coast Conference finale on Friday night.
Senior Andres Jimenez closed out his career scoring the lone goal for the Broncos (5-10-2, 1-5-1 WCC) in the sixth minute to put Santa Clara up 1-0 before the Toreros (7-7-5, 2-1-3 WCC) leveled it in the 18th minute where the score remained for the next 92 minutes.
Jimenez scored his fifth goal of the season, the second most on the team, on a feed from Miles Robinson to give the Broncos an early lead.
However, the Toreros answered back on a header by Allen Luhrs that hit the left post before finding the back of the net to tie it up at 1-all. It was the only shot by the Toreros in the half compared to three for the Broncos.
The Broncos also outshot the Toreros in the second half, 5-to-2, including one on frame in the 87th minute by Alan Camacho Soto but San Diego goalkeeper Matt Wiher made a save to help send the match to overtime.
In the two overtime sessions, San Diego outshot the Broncos 2-to-1 with Wiher and Bronco goalkeeper Dakota Havlick each making a save to preserve the 1-1 draw.
Both squads played in its eighth overtime match of the season, with the Broncos finishing at 1-5-2 and Toreros with a 2-1-5 record in extra session matches.
