SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer continues its five-match homestand hosting Grand Canyon on Sunday in the first ever meeting between the two programs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as the Broncos will look to continue to build on its 2-1 start to the season, coming off
a 5-1 win over San Jose State in the last match.
THE LOPES
Grand Canyon is led by Schellas Hyndman who is in his fifth season with the program and 36th season as a collegiate head coach. The longtime coach at SMU where he led the Mustangs to two College Cup appearances in 2000 and 2005 also coached at the professional level, being named the 2010 MLS Coach of the Year for FC Dallas. He is one of only two active Division I men's soccer coaches with 500 wins along with The Citadel's Mark Berson.
In 2018, the Lopes claimed the Western Athletic Conference Tournament title to earn their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in just its second year of NCAA Division I postseason eligibility. They return 18 players from last season including six starters. Sophomore goalkeeper George Tasouris was named preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year after being named MVP of the WAC Tournament last season when he set the tournament record with 22 saves.
The Lopes are 1-1 this season including a 1-0 loss at Saint Mary's on Friday.
SERIES HISTORY
Sunday's match is the first ever meeting between Grand Canyon and Santa Clara.
THE BRONCOS
The 2019 campaign marks the 18th season at the helm for Santa Clara head coach Cam Rast who leads a squad that returns 23 players including three All-West Coast Conference honorees from a team that finished 5-10-2.
Nineteen of the returners saw action last season with 13 of them appearing in double digit matches to account for 80 percent of its goals and all of its assists.
Junior
Javier Ruiz Duran led the team in goals (six) and assists (five) to earn All-WCC Second Team recognition along with senior
Miles Robinson who scored four and assisted on three. Sophomore
Eduardo Lopez Perez tallied a pair of goals and was named to the WCC All-Freshman team.
Redshirt junior
Henning Jolivet brings the most experience between the woodwork playing in seven matches last season to finish with a 3-3-1 record and a 1.89 goals against average.

Leavey Center lot (see below for access), located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to kickoff. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located adjacent to

The construction of the Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Athletic Excellence Center has necessitated the closure of the main entrance (off Accolti Way) to the Leavey Center parking lot. Access is now ONLY directly from El Camino Real (Route 82). If you are traveling east on El Camino Real, the Leavey lot entrance will be approximately 150 yards on the right (enter through the black iron gate) after you pass the main campus entrance. If you are traveling west on El Camino, make a u-turn at the main campus entrance at Palm Drive/Railroad Ave and follow the same directions.
