SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer will put their four-match win streak on the line against No. 8-ranked Saint Mary's in the West Coast Conference opener on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Broncos return to Stevens Stadium after playing the last five on the road where they went 4-1 including shutouts in the last three matches. Santa Clara has not given up a goal in 721 minutes of action going back to UNLV's first half goal back on Sept. 22.
The Broncos defense which has posted a gaudy 0.587 goals-against-average, good for 11th best in the nation, will be tested against the Gaels with their high-powered offense that's ranked third in the nation averaging three goals per game.
THE GAELS (9-1)
Featuring the third-ranked offense in the nation averaging three goals per game and a defense that has shut out its opponents seven times this season, Saint Mary's enters Saturday's contest with a 9-1 record. The lone blemish came at the hands of UC Davis on Sept. 26 which snapped their 31-match unbeaten streak dating back to the 2017 season.
The Gaels have three of the top four scorers in the conference led by Anders Engebretsen with nine goals. Joseph Restani and Jake Rudel have seven and four goals, respectively, good for second and fourth best marks in the WCC. Engebretsen also tops the league with seven assists and ranks second in the nation with 2.50 points per game.
Saint Mary's has allowed just one first half goal this season outscoring the opponents 9-1 in the first 45 minutes. And in the second half, they have a 20-9 advantage in goals. For the season, the Gaels have outshot the opposition 164 to 78.
Goalkeeper Remi Prieur has a 0.90 goals-against-average and a .750 save percentage while playing every minute.
