Men’s Soccer Falls to Incarnate Word

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Victor Velasco scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute to give Incarnate Word a 2-1 win over Santa Clara men's soccer in a nonconference match on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.

Velasco tallied his game winner off a kick save made by Broncos goalkeeper Blake Gillingham who got his foot on the initial shot by Abe Ashby.  The ricochet bounced right back to Velasco on the left side and he found the back of the net with his left foot.

The Broncos (3-3-4) outshot the Cardinals (1-11) by an 18-11 margin but was only able to get it past UIW goalkeeper Hugo Constant once.  That came in the 32nd minute when Oladayo Thomas got behind the Cardinals defense where his initial shot was saved by Constant but got a second chance and slipped it past two retrieving defenders to level the match at 1-all.

Four minutes earlier, in the 28th minute, Francisco Segura got UIW on the board first when he was on the receiving end of a nice cross from Velsaco to the far post and buried a one-timer.

Velasco had a game-high tying three shots on goal along with Thomas.

Constant finished with four saves while Gillingham was credited with five.
