Mykell Bates was named Santa Clara University men’s soccer assistant coach in January 2019 after serving a year as a volunteer assistant. Along with his duties as a Bronco volunteer assistant, Bates was the youth coach for the Mountain View Los Altos Soccer Club, a role he served since 2013 and coached the U-17 Silicon Valley Soccer Academy.
Prior to MVLA, Bates was selected in the second round of the 2012 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft by Toronto FC after a four-year standout career at Santa Clara.
The Roseville, California, native was a two-time captain on the 2010 and 2011 squads and was selected All-West Coast Conference First Team in those seasons. Bates led the Broncos to a conference championship in 2010. He was also named third team 2011 NCAA Men's Division I NSCAA All Far-West Region.
Bates captained the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team in 2007 and led the team to the round of 16 in the U-17 FIFA World Cup in South Korea where he scored three goals.
Bates received his bachelor of science degree in marketing from Santa Clara in 2012, before obtaining a master's degree in kinesiology with a focus on exercise physiology from San Jose State University in 2015.
