Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 To Gonzaga

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team faced a hard-fought and rainy 2-1 loss to Gonzaga Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Junior Stephen McCarthy scored the lone goal for the Broncos.

Santa Clara (3-8-5, 1-4-3 WCC) held the attack advantage for the majority of the first half, but the real action happened after halftime.

The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute on a goal from McCarthy. The Colleyville, Texas native received the ball at the top of the box and sent a swift shot past Gonzaga's keeper, Scott Barnum. It was McCarthy's second goal of the season.

However, the Bulldogs (6-7-2, 3-4-1 WCC) evened the score in the 74th minute. Tye Perdido dribbled the ball up the middle and sent a through ball to Nick Love, who was about 16 yards out. Love found the lower left corner of the goal.

At 87:12, Mitch Boland scored his first goal of the season to give Gonzaga an edge over Santa Clara. Off a free kick from Ben Funkhouser, Boland layed a low header into the lower left corner past Bronco keeper Kevin Klasila.

The Broncos return to action on Sunday, Nov. 2 against the Pilots of Portland. Kick off is schedule for 2 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
