2003 Season Kickoff
The 2003 season kicked off on January 18th as Santa Clara hosted 4-time Division III national champion UC Santa Cruz. Coming off an undefeated home campaign in 2002, the Broncos looked to add to their impressive home record (40-5 over past four seasons) and extend an 11-match home wining streak. Santa Clara's doubles teams of Mike Bruggemann-Erich Chen, Rick Ruso-Francisco Zepponi and Taylor Bedilion-Federico Mattioli made quick work of the Banana Slugs to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. As the abnormal thick morning fog burned off, Bedilion and Zepponi continued the Bronco home cooking in singles as they served up a pair of solid victories to make the score 3-0, good guys. The Slugs, however, were not ready for the bill and cut the lead to 3-2. A vocal and supportive crowd now shifted their attention to court #6. Senior Mike Bruggemann had evened his match at oneset a pieceand begun a third set. The Punahou High graduate ripped forehand after forehand en route to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory and clinched the match for the Broncos. Moments later, Federico Mattioli closed out the day's action with a thrilling comeback victory to extend the Bronco home win streak to twelve (over past two seasons). Game ball honors were awarded to Bruggemann while the new coaching staff earned their first Bronco victory.
Bronco Pro-Am Invitational
Santa Clara men's tennis will host their annual Bronco Pro-Am Invitational on Saturday, March 22nd from 10:00am - 2:00pm. The event will feature a continental breakfast, four rounds of casual, yet intense, doubles with current and former Bronco tennis players, a championship super tiebreaker final for the coveted Pro-Am title, a buffet lunch and an afternoon of laughs, high fives and good times.
The Pro-Am will be held at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center. Along with the friendly competition and tasty food, all entrants will receive a Pro-Am t-shirt and membership to the 2002-2003 Silver Racquet Club.
All proceeds generated from the Pro-Am will directly benefit the Broncos' Spring Break trip to Southern California from March 26-29. Invitations will be mailed out in mid-February, though all interested Bronco fans and Pro-Am grinders may enter early via email or phone call to George Husack at ghusack@scu.edu or (408) 554-4069.

Who is this bare-chested Bronco? He had a successful 4-year SCU tennis career from 1996-2000, could be found in the weight room more than the library, would (and still will) take off his shirt in a moment's notice and was recently accepted as a firefighter for the city of Santa Clara.
If you answered Marcell Hlousek, you're absolutely right. In his third season coaching the Broncos, the "Body" is also tending to emergencies in the neighborhood. We have yet to see one of his rigs on campus, however, he posed next to a "brush truck" while on a roadtrip with the team in Arizona. Congratulations on the new position Body and have fun keeping the station clean during your rookie year.
