Bronco Pro-Am Invitational...A Smashing Success!
The Broncos hosted the 7th Annual Bronco Pro-Am Invitational last March 22 at the SCU Tennis Center. The round-robin doubles tournament featured a 44 player draw made up of current and former Bronco players, as well as many Bronco tennis supporters.
"What a spectacular day," head coach George Husack said. "We more than doubled our participation goal, as so many people gratefully contributed to make the Pro-Am a very special event. The support was amazing."
Jim Delehanty '44 of Hillsborough, Calif., teamed with senior co-captain Michael Bruggemann to capture the championship. The duo defeated Dave Najour '77 and Frank Seitz '88 10-8 in the 10-point, super tie-break final.
Many fans joined the men's program to play, volunteer or support the event in some fashion- most of which were Santa Clara alumni. They included Gia Biagi '93, Rob Bruggemann '72, Jim Delehanty '44, Chris Fowler '90, Patrick Fowler '87, Greg Fox '97, Greg Geibel '05, John Giacomazzi '52, Rick Glass '82, Karrie Grasser '70, Phil Grasser '67, Marcell Hlousek '00, Aaron Hutchings '97, Jim Laccabue '83, Justin Lent '00, David Lu '91, Lou Lucas '53, Al Martin '49, Marc Moran '90, Dave Najour '77, Lars Nelson '00, Ryan Pang '98, Matt Panuwat '99, Doug Peters '70, Kim Rupert '77, Richard Ruso, Sr. '75, Beth Ruso '76, Joe Scalmanini '67, Frank Seitz '88, Jeff Snyder '96, John Vest '99, John Vondollen '04, Scott Watters '00 and Dave Zahn '94.
The Invitational was made up of five rounds of doubles matches, with the top point-getters advancing to the semifinal and final rounds. All proceeds generated from the Pro-Am benefitted the Broncos' Spring Break trip to Southern California.
"This is by far one of our favorite events of the year," Husack added. "It's great to see the current and former players share stories, as well as give everyone the opportunity to learn what Santa Clara tennis means to them."
Scholar-Athlete of the Week
Sophomore Taylor Bedilion was named Bronco Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week of March 3-9. Sponsored by Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar, the weekly award is given to a male and female Bronco student-athlete based on their academic and athletic achievements during the school year.
The sophomore from San Anselmo has used speed and a solid transition game to lead the Broncos in singles victories this season. An undeclared major in the College of Arts & Sciences, Taylor posted a 3.82 fall quarter GPA. Congratulations T!
Broncos in the Classroom
Nine of Santa Clara University's 17 intercollegiate athletic teams recorded overall grade point averages of 3.0 or better during the fall quarter, while three others maintained over a 2.9 according to data compiled by the school's Department of Athletics and Recreation.
Men's tennis recorded the top grade point average (3.32) among all men's teams and finished second overall among all Bronco teams (women's tennis was #1 overall). Other programs finishing above a 3.0 for the fall quarter included men's and women's cross country, softball, volleyball, women's water polo, women's crew and women's soccer.
Student-athletes at Santa Clara University graduate at the highest rate in the West Coast Conference, the second-highest among Division I institutions in the state of California and have recorded its second-highest percentage in the last decade according to the latest graduation rate report produced by the NCAA.

Junior Erich Chen and senior Federico Mattioli will celebrate birthdays in April. E turns 21 on April 9 while Guga turns 23 on April 15... Bronco alumnus John Schrup '75 was recently elected President and CEO of the newly established United American Bank in San Mateo, Calif... Lars "Cat Daddy" Nelson '00 announced his engagement to Alison Skoug of Wausau, Wisconsin. The couple will be married on August 23... Ryan Pang '98 is directing a tennis academy for junior tennis players in San Jose and working on opening a South Bay tennis center in the not-so-distant future... 'Pretty hair' was seen on campus back on March 22 - yes, John Vest '99 was in the house... Junior/Senior Rick Ruso '03/04 recorded a 3.5 winter quarter GPA - top individual effort on the team.
