Husack Promoted as Men's Tennis Coach

July 29, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University has named longtime men's tennis assistant coach George Husack as the program's fourth head coach in its 20-year history, Director of Athletics and Recreation Cheryl L. Levick announced today.

"I am pleased that George will be leading our men's tennis program," said Levick. "He has spent the last several years as an assistant coach and has been a big factor in building our program. I have every confidence we will be able to continue that momentum under George's leadership."

Husack replaces Sean Burns, who resigned his position as the winningest head men's tennis coach in Santa Clara history to pursue opportunities in private business. In addition to his coaching duties on the Mission campus, Husack also served as the athletic department's director of marketing and corporate partnerships.

"I am thrilled to have an opportunity to build upon the success and achievements that this tennis program has accomplished over the years," Husack said. "It has been an incredible experience learning from and growing with the program over the past seven years and now a tremendous honor to fill the shoes of one of the best head coaches and friends that I have ever known."

Husack inherits a Bronco team that has posted a winning record in each of the past eight seasons and has been included in national rankings for the past three, peaking at a program-high 55th during the 2002 season. The Broncos won 12 matches in a row during its toughest stretch on last year's schedule, and was highlighted by victories over top-50 programs such as the ACC's Clemson, Oregon from the Pac-10, Big-Ten power Wisconsin and the WCC's San Diego.

"These guys are a very determined group who have greatly contributed to the program and will continue to accomplish many of our goals," he added. "I look forward to working with them as well as new Broncos down the road."

Husack made his mark on the Bronco courts seven years ago joining Burns' staff as an assistant coach while competing on the International Tennis Federation's Satellite Tour. His primary focus on the courts has been educating players on technical and strategic elements of winning college tennis and furthering their tennis careers on the professional tour.

Aside from his on-court duties, Husack has been primarily responsible for the Broncos' recruiting and fundraising efforts. Last season, he played a key role in signing one of the top recruiting classes in program history. Husack also manages the Silver Racquet Club, the program's booster club, and produced Netscoop, the program's newsletter. He launched the Nike Tennis Camp in 1999 at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center and has co-directed the program since its inception. He also began the USTA Team Tennis program in 1998.

Prior to Santa Clara, Husack competed on the International Tennis Federation's Satellite Tour for three years, making tournament stops in Mexico, Germany and Japan, as well as across the United States. In 1996 and '97, he played No. 1 singles and doubles for Tus-Breitscheid of the German Club Tennis League, leading the team to a league championship in 1997.

A native of San Mateo, Husack played No. 1 singles and doubles at Canada College in 1988 before continuing his career at San Diego State from 1988-91. After receiving his bachelor's degree in finance, Husack earned his MBA in marketing from the University of San Francisco in 1995.
