SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis program has announced that Brett Masi has joined the staff as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach George Husack announced today. Masi will begin work on the Mission Campus immediately and will share responsibilities related to all aspects of the program.
Husack's coaching staff is now complete, with Bronco alumnus Marcell Hlousek also serving as a volunteer assistant coach.
"I'm very excited to have Brett join our staff," Husack said. "I always respected him as a very tough player when he was at Cal Poly. His experience on the court is going to add a tremendous value to our program, while his knowledge of Southern California will help us in recruiting some of the top players in the country."
Masi is one of the Mustangs' winningest tennis players of all time, concluding his career with a 60-29 record and peaked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll ranked 38th nationally.
"I could not ask to be in a better situation than the one presented here at Santa Clara," Masi said. "Santa Clara actually recruited me, and they were one of my top choices back then, so I know I'll fit in. I already feel the family setting this department offers and George and I have a lot of the same goals. I'm looking forward to starting the season."
A native of Riverside, Masi went 12-5 his freshman season, going a perfect 5-0 at the No. 3 position. As a sophomore, he moved up to the second singles slot, where he went 8-6. Masi closed out his junior campaign on a 14-match winning streak, finishing with a 20-7 overall record and a spot on the All-Big West Second Team. Masi's senior campaign saw him post an 18-7 mark while winning eight of his last 10 matches. During his senior year, Masi defeated Pepperdine's Robert Kendrick, who was ranked fifth in the country at the time.
