Welcome back to the news and notes of Netscoop - the official newsletter of Santa Clara University Men's Tennis. There's a new look to this year's edition as well as a schedule of distribution dates of when to expect Netscoop in your mailbox.Your suggestions and comments are always welcome and greatly appreciated. Game, Set, Match...Coach Sean Burns
Head Coach Sean Burns resigned from his post last May after a successful and storied nine-year career. In his tenure on the Mission Campus, Sean transformed SCU Men's Tennis into one of the most exciting and successful programs in Division I tennis. He compiled a 130-91 record while his teams rewrote the record books. Inheriting a program that recorded three consecutive 3-win seasons, Burns led the Broncos to a 12-win season in his first campaign. Other highlights include being named WCC Coach of the Year on four occasions, coaching twelve All-WCC selections, recording a 40-5 home record at the Santa Clara University Tennis Center and positioning SCU in the national rankings - reaching a program high of #55 in 2002."I've been considering a number of options in my life for quite some time and now is simply the time to take advantage of them," said Burns. "If I were to continue to coach college tennis, there is no place I would rather coach than at Santa Clara. And there is no other group of players I would rather coach than the team we have right now. Santa Clara will always have a special place in my heart and I have loved every minute of being here. Though I am sad to leave the program while it is still in an exciting growing stage, I look forward to watching the continued progress of the team as a fan and loyal supporter."
A 1988 graduate of Holy Cross, Sean has now returned to campus but this time with a backpack. He is currently attending Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in pursuit of his MBA. All the Broncos will miss him and look forward to seeing him back at SCU very soon. Erin go braugh!
Former Mustang Turns Bronco
SCU Men's Tennis welcomed Brett Masi to the Bronco coaching staff last September, joining Marcell Hlousek (SCU '00) as an assistant coach for George Husack, SCU's new head coach. A graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2000 and former All-Big West honoree, Brett will share responsibilities related to all aspects of the program."I'm very excited to have Brett join our program," Husack said. "I always respected him as a player when he was a Mustang and he'll be sure to add great value to the team. His competitive fire and national experience on the court, combined with his knowledge of the Southern California tennis scene will have an immediate impact on our player development and in recruiting some of the top players in the country."
Masi is one of Cal Poly's winningest tennis players of all time, concluding his career with a 60-29 record and peaking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll ranked 38th nationally. "I could not ask to be in a better situation than the one presented here at Santa Clara," Masi said. "I already feel the family setting this program and athletic department offers and George, Marcell and I share similar goals. I'm looking forward to the experience and starting the season."
A native of Riverside, Masi sat down with sophomore Francisco Zepponi after the first week of fall practice to answer a few questions. 2002-2003 Schedule Released
Santa Clara Men's Tennis released their 2002-2003 schedule which features a number of exciting and challenging matches. The Broncos will compete in at least four fall tournaments and host ten events during their traditional dual match season.The 2003 calendar year features roadtrips to the desert for a pair against Arizona and Arizona State, to the Pacific Northwest to face Portland and Washington, to the Midwest for match-ups with Boise State and New Mexico, to Southern California for Spring Break to square off with San Diego State, LMU and Pepperdine and finally to the University of San Diego for the WCC Championships.
Santa Clara will look to improve upon their 40-5 four-year home record at the SCU Tennis Center - affectionately known as "Our House". UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii and the University of Pacific are a small taste of the teams visiting the Mission Campus this season.
We look forward to seeing you both at home and on the road as all fans will be in the running for the coveted 2003 Fan of the Year Award. Markus "Kato" Johnson, the defending title holder, welcomes all challengers.
