Men's Tennis Wins Twice at Home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis team earned two victories today, defeating league opponent Portland 5-2 and Sacramento State 6-1 at the Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos' record improves to 9-11 on the season, 4-1 in the West Coast Conference. The Pilots fall to 5-9, 1-3, and the Hornets move to 9-8.

The Broncos swept the doubles competition in both matches, with junior Taylor Bedilion and freshman Kevin McQuaid pairing up for their fourth straight victory at No. 3 doubles.

"We had a long Spring Break on the road and it took its effect on the team earlier in the week, but the guys battled through and took care of business today," SCU head coach George Husack said after the doubleheader.

Kevin McQuaid was first off the courts in both Bronco contests on Sunday.

Junior Francisco Zepponi clinched the match during singles play against Portland, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Colby Jager . Senior Erich Chen clinched the contest vs. Sacramento State, taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Joakim Rydberg. McQuaid picked up his 10th win of the dual season, and 17th overall, with his successful court three debut against the Hornets.

The Broncos return to the courts in two weeks, visiting Pacific on April 15 and Saint Mary's on April 17. SCU will return home to the Degheri Tennis Center to host the 2004 West Coast Conference Championships April 23-25.

"We have some time off before our next match, which will be good for us to prepare for a strong last couple of weeks," Husack concluded.
