May 26, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and Recreation had 10 student-athletes earn Spring All-Academic honors from the West Coast Conference on Wednesday. The Broncos had 10 athletes represented on the six spring teams that were selected by the league office from many well-credentialed nominees.

Men's Tennis led the way with three honorees. Erich Chen is computer engineering major balancing a 3.40 GPA and made the team for the second straight year. Teammate Gernot Fischer boasts the same GPA in management, while Ben Hidalgo is averaging a 3.80 GPA as a graduate student in the Leavey School of Business.

Baseball and women's tennis followed with two representatives each. Anthony Rea repeated last year's recognition and Will Thompson joined him for this year's honor. They posted overall GPAs of 3.39 in economics and a 3.24 in political science, respectively. Janalle Kaloi (3.60 psychology) and Casey Knutson (3.70 sociology) earned the honor for the first time in each of their careers.

Like Rea and Chen, Justin Ahasic of men's golf (3.50 English) and Amanda Kremer of women's crew (3.23 liberal studies) repeated as 2003 honorees. Women's golfer Meggie Fagundes (3.07 business) also earned recognition.

During the fall seasons the Broncos had seven student-athletes selected to the All-Academic teams, bringing the total to 17 on the year. Additionally, student athletes at Santa Clara University graduate at the highest rate in the WCC and at the second-highest rate among all Division I institutions in California. SCU athletes also recorded the second-highest percentage graduation rate in California for the last decade, according to annual report released by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
