A Celebration Of The Season...
The annual team banquet, hosted by SCU alumni and parents, Rick and Beth Ruso, brought players, friends and family together to celebrate the season and honor several Broncos.
Senior Federico Mattioli was named Bronco of the Year, an award given annually to the player who best exemplifies what it means to play Bronco Tennis, including attitude, effort, support of teammates, results and best representation of the program. "Guga's" successful career marks place him in the record books for both singles and doubles.
Senior Michael Bruggemann became the all-time doubles victory leader this season, however, it was with his efforts in singles and as co-captain that he was voted Most Improved Bronco. Taylor Bedilion was named Mad Dog of the Year. Named after graduate Scott Watters, the award is given to the player that comes through in the clutch when his team needs it the most. "T" split time between the No. 3 and No. 4 slots leading all Broncos in singles victories and earning All-WCC honors.
Ted Blosser's dedication to his teammates, witty humor and desire to learn and excel made him a unanimous selection for the Roy T. Zepponi Rookie of the Year. A special presentation was made in memory of Bronco fan and parent, Roy T. Zepponi, for his support of SCU tennis and antique tennis racket collection.
Dolores Zepponi and her puppy Bella attended all but one match this season at home and on the road, while Jane and Dave Najour served up tasty tailgates at all home events. For their passionate support, all four were honored as Fans of the Year.
Meet The Newest Broncos...
Four players will join the Broncos this fall for the 2003-2004 season. They include Gernot Fischer, Eric Kochanski, Kevin McQuaid and Bobby Rasmussen.
Fischer, a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference player transfers to Santa Clara from Tennessee Tech where he spent three seasons playing No. 1 singles and doubles for the Golden Eagles. He garnered an ITA national ranking of No. 91 and was named OVC Player of the Year this season, as he led Tech to a conference championship and berth in the NCAA tournament. Kochanski joins the Broncos following two years at West Virginia University. He played No. 1 singles for the Mountaineers this season and shared doubles duties at both No. 1 and No. 2. Kochanski has posted singles victories over opponents from No. 47-ranked William & Mary, No. 22 Ohio State, and NCAA National Champion, Illinois.
McQuaid,a Los Alamitos High graduate, is a 4-time Sunset Player of the Year and was ranked as high as No. 3 in Southern California Boys 18s. He was ranked No. 15 nationally in Boys 16s and among the top 50 Seniors in Boys 18s.
Rasmussen, a graduate of Regis Jesuit High School, was ranked No. 2 in the Intermountain Section. He was a Colorado state champion during his sophomore and junior seasons, and a finalist as a senior.
"We have added experience, depth and talent to our lineup and these four individuals are tremendous additions to the program," exclaimed coach George Husack. "When combined with our returners, this team is going to be very solid from top to bottom. I can't wait for practice to get started next fall and see how we position ourselves for the 2004 WCC Championships and NCAA Tournament."

Ted Blosser turned 19 on June 17, Gernot Fischer was 22 on June 13, Bobby Rasmussen was 18 on July 11 and Assistant Coach Marcell Hlousek will be 24 on August 29... Erich Chen, Ben Hidalgo and Rick Ruso were named ITA National Scholar Athletes after recording a cumulative 3.5 gpa during the 02-03 academic year... Francisco Zepponi added a blond color scheme to his pretty hairdew...Assistant Coach Brett "Biggles" Masi successfully directed the NIKE Adult Tennis Camp and Bronco Kidz All-Sports Camp...First practice is Sept 15...School begins Sept 22.
