San Bruno, Calif. - Santa Clara found itself well represented today when the West Coast Conference announced the All-WCC teams today, as six players earned all-conference distinction, the most in program history. Junior Jan Macek, who will graduate early in June with a degree in Finance, led the charge with a spot on the All-WCC Singles First Team, while freshmen Brian Brogan and Tommy Hicks earned All-WCC Honorable Mention Accolades for their singles accomplishments this year. Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields were voted by the league's coaches to the Doubles All-WCC Second Team and Macek and partner Bobby Rasmussen took home All-WCC honorable mention status.
"I'm very proud of these great competitors as their all-conference selections are a testament of their commitment to the program and credibility within the WCC," noted head coach George Husack.
"Jan had a very solid season in conference. His WCC victories were impressive and his success at the top of the lineup had a significant impact on our team's performance," said Husack of his All-WCC First Teamer. "It's fitting that he receives this award after two consistent years of enthusiastic and hard-nosed competitiveness as a Bronco."
Pepperdine's Scott Doerner repeated as WCC Player of the Year, while San Diego's Ryo Sekiguchi was tabbed the WCC Freshman of the Year. The league's Coach of the Year honor was bestowed upon Adam Steinberg of Pepperdine after leading the No. 2 Waves to their 16th consecutive conference championships and an overall record of 30-2.
Doerner, Macek and San Diego's Pierrick Ysern, last season's NCAA Division I Men's Singles Tennis national runner-up, highlighted the All-WCC First Team and the first time in history, the coaches selected a second team of players with Pepperdine and San Diego represented by two players apiece. The All-WCC Doubles First Team was made up of teams from Pepperdine and San Diego, while McQuaid and Shields were voted to the second team along with James Redpath and Scott Kennel of Portland and Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson of Pepperdine.
Macek finished the season with an overall record of 15-20, including a 5-4 mark in the WCC. He competed all 26 dual matches at the No. 1 slot for the Broncos. Brian Brogan established himself as one of the most versatile players on the squad, playing anywhere from the No. 2 to No. 6 spots. Overall, he compiled a 15-16 singles record, going 4-2 in league play. In addition, Brogan clinched a team-leading four dual matches. Tommy Hicks emerged this season as one of the steadiest players on the team, forging a team-best 24-11 overall mark, with a 17-9 record in dual match play. The 24 victories in his rookie campaign gives Hicks sole possession of fourth place in the Santa Clara record books for singles wins in a single season.
McQuaid and Shields formed an effective partnership this season, producing a 20-14 record, including a 9-4 mark at the No. 1 position. The duo also posted a stellar 7-1 record in the WCC. The 20 doubles victories is also the most in a single season for a Bronco tandem, eclipsing the marks of Erich Chen and Michael Bruggemann (2003 and Ryan Livesay and Michael Bruggemann (2001), as both squads had 19 wins. Macek and Rasmussen occupied the No. 1 spot for the beginning of the year, ending at the No. 2 slot with a 5-2 mark. Overall, they were 14-12 with an undefeated record of 3-0 in league action.
