A Summer of Fun and New Experiences...
Santa Clara's graduation weekend seems like just the other day, but much has happened since the 2005 academic year came to a close. Graduates Taylor Bedilion and Francisco Zepponi earned their business degrees, while Ben Hidalgo added an MBA to his resume. Eric Kochanski began a management trainee position with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and is currently completing fall quarter classes towards his degree. The rest ot the Broncos have been busy, and over the summer, competed in the United States and Europe. Jan Macek attended summer school classes before leaving for Germany to visit family and play in men's events. Kevin McQuaid battled the red clay in Spain and then met up with Bobby Rasmussen in France for a half dozen tournaments. Blane Shields logged plenty of mileage as he competed in Northern and Southern California, as well as Ohio and Michigan. AJ Kerin spent time in New York and Chicago grinding with midwest and east coast counterparts while also working at Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos. Chris Iwamura trained in Hawaii with
former Bronco Mike Bruggemann and taught tennis at Punahou High School. Tyler Wilson returned home to the Pacific Northwest where he garnered success in men's opens while also fishing and rafting. And the freshman class - Brian Brogan, Tommy Hicks, Kenzo Hirakawa-Wong and Aneal Vallurupalli prepared for their college careers by competing in junior events and attending new student orientation. Coach Erich Chen continued consulting for Accenture, while coach Brian Eagle co-directed Bronco summer camps with Nick Fustar and George Husack. The summer was also a heavy recruiting time as the coaching staff attended junior events in California, Michigan, South Carolina and Washington D.C. The Broncos reported to campus on Sept 12 for Bronco Boot Camp.
A New Bronco is Born...
Ali and Lars Nelson (2000) are proud parents as Isabella Jean Nelson was born on September 3rd. The newest Bronco, or Wisconsin Badger according to Ali, was born at Scripps Memorial and weighed 7 lbs, 6 oz.
Bronco European Road Rules
Kevin McQuaid was officially cleared to play by team doctors and returned to the courts last spring after spending much of the year rehabilitating a knee injury. "I was so excited to be back playing again," said McQuaid. "It had been a long time since drills and match play were part of my daily routine." Much of Kevin's return consisted of a challenging training regimen. Rather than spend the summer in Southern California, McQuaid spent six weeks on red clay in Barcelona, Spain where he trained with top European juniors and ATP tour players. "The clay was great for my knees and got me back into shape."After his Spanish tour stop, Kevin then met sophomore Bobby Rasmussen in France for a month of tournaments. The pair hired former Bronco Sean Burns as their traveling coach and competed in six men's evnts. At Puget sur Argens, Kevin reached the semifinals, while Bobby captured the championship.
2005-06 Schedule
The Broncos announced their challenging season schedule as they began team training in early September. A youthful and talented group of competitors, SCU will compete in several fall events before huddling up 29 times during the season. In the fall are two home events: SCU Bronco Classic, October 7-9 and ITA Regional Championships, Oct 21-25. The tough dual match season includes eleven home contests and many battles with nationally ranked opponents including USC, Cal, Pepperdine and Tulsa. The promotional schedule includes the Bronco Pro-Am on April 29 and a Bronco Tennis reunion on March 25 as former players will be invited back to campus. We hope to see you on campus or even on the road.
Bronco Bits
It was an all-Bronco affair at the Kailua Night Doubles Championship this summer in Hawaii as former Broncos Erich Chen '04 and Mike Bruggemann '03 defeated Taylor Bedilion '05 and Chris Lam '02 for their second Kailua title in three years...Taylor and former Fresno State Bulldog standout Nick Fustar joined the men's tennis coaching staff this fall...Special thanks to Erich Chen and Brian Eagle for their amazing commitment and contributions last season... The NCAA Championships are coming to the Bay Area in 2006...Both the men's and women's events will be held at Stanford University May 18-29, 2006...The Degheri Tennis Center had its courts resurfaced this summer...New windscreens will also be installed giving the facility a sharp new look...sound system and online scoring are next on the facility agenda.
